Melbourne also appeared in the top trending hashtags of the year, alongside #photography, #love and #art.

Sydney had a win of its own with the Sydney Opera House snagging the top spot for the most tagged “Aussie Icon”, while the city’s famous Bondi Beach was the most tagged beach in the country.

Instagram also predicted the trends it believes will take centre stage in 2023, such as a focus on sustainable fashion and activism.

“In 2023, more members of Gen Z will use their dollars to support causes and communities,” the report stated.

“While 30% of Gen Z is old enough to vote, teens use platforms like Instagram to vote with their wallets.”

When asked to summarise 2023 in one word, the top responses from Gen Z were healing, energised and main character energy.

Meta Group Industry Director Naomi Shepherd said that Australians “continue to pave the way globally for new territories of expression and cultural curation”.

“Australians love Instagram, and the 2022 Gen Z trends data shows that Instagram continues to be the place where culture is created, and trends take off,” she said.

“2022 was a year where Australians inspired their communities, shaped trends, shared their creativity and grew their audiences on Instagram.”
