The Dodgers and Yankees are playing each other for a record twelfth time in the World Series, with the Yankees holding an eight - three advantage. But the two teams aren’t just playing for the prestige of lifting the Commissioner’s Trophy - there’s some serious money on the line for the winning team.

How much money is at stake for winning the World Series?

Unlike many other tournaments, the actual prize money isn’t set before it starts, it depends on ticket sales, TV rights and other postseason revenue. For 2024, the winners are expected to rake in around $35 million, with the cash being split between players and coaching staff.

The runner-up team also stand to make a significant amount, with the prize pot for them expected to be around $25 million. (The numbers are based on percentages: the champions get 36% of the total pot, and the runners-up get 24%.)

This method of deciding prize money by basing it on playoff revenue has existed since MLB’s early days. Historically, though shares were modest: in the 1903 World Series (the first official championship), each winning player received a mere $1,182, equivalent to around $36,000 today. Curiously in the first World Series the losing Pittsburgh Pirates players actually ended up earning more because the franchise owner Barney Dreyfuss added his share of the gate receipts to the players’ pot.

How is the World Series winning pool split up?

The winning club can decide how it wants to divide up the money between players and non-playing staff, including coaches, trainers and  “non-uniformed personnel” like clubhouse attendants, chefs, security guards, bus drivers and grounds crew.

Expect players to be in line for just under half a million dollars.

Remember the players also get championship rings, which can be worth significant amounts. Depending on how many stones they are set with and the level of intricacy of the carving they can be worth from $20,000 to $70,000, with their value potentially increasing over time.
