Brands are reportedly paying seven-figure sums to advertise on the Las Vegas Sphere’s LED exterior during Super Bowl week.

The Nevada city is to host the NFL’s championship Game for the first time ever on Sunday, with the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs to meet at the 65,000-capacity Allegiant Stadium.

How much do Super Bowl Sphere ads cost?

Citing industry sources, the business magazine Campaign says companies are paying between $1 million and $2 million per 12 hours of Sphere screen time, with this half day of advertising broken up into smaller segments throughout the week. The closer to the Super Bowl their ads appear on the entertainment venue’s ‘exosphere’, the more advertisers are charged.

Per Campaign, the companies running ads on the outside of the Sphere include Adidas, FedEx, Nike, Paramount and Verizon.

This week, the NFL revealed that it had also reached a deal with Sphere Entertainment Co, the Sphere’s owners, that will see “custom Super Bowl LVIII content” displayed on the arena’s exterior.

Las Vegas Sphere: cost, capacity...

Built at a cost of around $2.3 billion, the Sphere boasts an 18,600-seat auditorium with a wraparound interior LED screen, in addition to its LED exterior.

The Irish rock band U2 opened the venue in September last year, playing the first show in a 40-date residency that is due to run until early March.

In November, the Sphere was used as part of the backdrop to Formula One’s Las Vegas Grand Prix, with images and information relating to the race displayed on its outside.

How much do Super Bowl TV ads cost?

The price of a Sphere ad may be high this week, but it’s significantly lower than the cost of a 30-second TV spot during the Super Bowl. The TV network CBS, which is to air the 49ers vs the Chiefs, is widely reported to be charging brands an average of $7 million for half a minute of air time.

Last year’s Super Bowl saw Fox earn around $600 million in gross advertising revenue for its broadcast of the Chiefs’ 38-35 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.
