Matt Chapman is up now and on the first pitch, LaMonte Wade Jr. takes second. There is no throw.

Sac fly: Giants score!

Jorge Soler the hitter and he fouls four pitches back. 0-2

He lifts a fly ball to deep center. James Outman tags and scores.

LaMonte Wade Jr. up now and he hits a sharp one to first. Freddie Freeman fields it and goes to second but the throw is wild and goes into left field. Mike Yastrzemski advances to third. Everybody is safe.

Jung Hoo Lee the hitter now and he lifts a high fly ball to right field. Hernández gets under it and pulls it down for out number one.

Mike Yastrzemski leads off and works the count full before the payoff from Lamet misses inside for a leadoff walk.

Chris Taylor the hitter and he lifts a high pop up to short. Ahmed puts it away to end the inning. The Giants are down to their last three outs.

James Outman the hitter now and he bangs one deep to center field. Not quite deep enough. Lee catches up to it on the warning track and puts it away for out number two.

Teoscar Hernández leads off for the Dodgers and he grounds one to third for Chapman. The throw to first gets out number one.

Thairo Estrada the hitter and he rips a sharp grounder to third. Muncy goes to first to end the inning.

Micahel Conforto up now and he works the count full before the payoff pitch is lifted to left field, but no trouble for Chris Taylor. Two out

Tom Murphy leads off with a soft dribbler to first. Freeman fields it and flips to Lamet who is covering the bag. One down.

This is special!

Max Muncy will hit now with a runner on first and two outs. Avila puts a great breaking ball in there for strike one.

The next one misses low and another misses high. 2-1

A big curve in the dirt makes it 3-1 for Muncy.

Avila serves up a fastball that is fouled back and the count is full. The payoff delivery is another curve ball and Muncy bites at it, coming up empty to end the inning. But the Dodgers tack on two more and lead 8-2 after seven.

Will Smith the hitter now and he runs the count full before the payoff delivery from Avila is punched into center field for a single! Freeman scores from second! The Dodgers are just opening it up here!

The review team look at the tag, but the call on the field is upheld. Freeman is in there. Great athleticism!

Freddie Freeman the hitter now and he rips one into the same spot as Mookie's! Betts scores easily! Freeman isn't as fast as Betts but goes for second anyway. the throw is in time but Freeman is able to bend Matrix-style and avoid the tag! He is in there with a double!

Shohei Ohtani the hitter now with one on and one out. A slider misses for ball one before Ohtani fouls SIX pitches back. 1-2

The seventh is tipped into the catcher's mitt for strike three. Two gone.

Double!

Mookie Betts the hitter now and he smashes one into the gap in right center. It goes to the wall and Betts is in there with a standup double.

Bottom 7th

Gavin Lux leads off with a hard hit line drive to second. He hit it right on the screws but right at Thairo Estrada.

Pitching Change

Nick Avila will take over on the mound as LaMonte Wade Jr takes over in right field.

Giants score!

Wilmer Flores up now and he puts up a tough fight, fouling off four pitches and working a 1-2 count. The sixth pitch of the at-bat is poked through for a single. Wade scores from second! Soler starts for third, then pulls up. The throw goes to second and Betts applies the tag to end the inning, but the run had already scored. The Giants pull one back and now trail 6-2

Jorge Soler up now and he lines one up the middle for a single. Back to back singles for the Giants as Wade advances to second.

Jung Hoo Lee leads off for the Giants and he grounds a routine roller to second. Lux goes to first for out number one.

Joe Kelly will take over on the mound for the Dodgers.

What a shot!

Teoscar Hernández is making a statement in the first seven games of the 2024 season.

Chris Taylor up now and he goes down swinging to end the inning but the Dodgers are out to a huge lead on a three run homer that sees their lead stretch to 6-1!

James Outman the hitter and he works the count to 2-2, fouling off four before the seventh pitch gets him swinging at strike three. Two gone.

Home Run Dodgers!

Teoscar Hernández will face the new pitcher with runners on the corners and one out. Rogers is a submarine-style pitcher and he delivers a slider in the middle of the zone and Hernández pounds it way, way out in left! That is gone a mile! The sound off the bat was like a shotgun going off! Three run shot and the Dodgers are way out in front!

Pitching Change

Bob Melvin will go ahead and make the change now, bringing on Tyler Rogers as Erik Miller goes 1/3 of an inning.

3-6 Fielder's choice

Max Muncy the hitter now with two on and nobody out. He grounds one to first. Flores goes to second to get Smith but that is all they get. Freeman advances to third on the play.

Mound visit

Pitching coach Bryan Price strides out to have a word with the rookie Miller.

Will Smith up now and he draws a walk on four straight pitches.

Freddie Freeman leads off and gets a middle-middle fastball that he rips into right field for a leadoff single.

Now it is the turn of Bob Melvin to dip into the bullpen, asking Erik Miller to take over from Keaton Winn.

Nick Ahmed the hitter and Brasier sets him up with sinkers before getting him to chase high heat for strike three. But the Giants claw one back with a Michael Conforto solo home run. they trail now 3-1

Thairo Estrada up now and he nubs one back to the mound. Brasier to first to get the out.

Solo Home Run!

Michael Conforto up now and he fouls three cutters off before watching a slider miss for ball one. 1-2

Another slider, another foul and it is still 1-2

Brasier goes to the slider again but Conforto smashes this one a mile! Way back in right field and gone! The Giants are on the board with a solo home run!

Top 6th

Tom Murphy will lead off for the Giants in the sixth and he rolls one to shortstop. Mookie Betts fields it and goes to first for the out.

Pitching Change

Dave Roberts will dip into the bullpen now and call on Ryan Brasier to replace an outstanding James Paxton.

Shohei Ohtani up now and he works the count full, fouling off four balls. The ninth delivery is lifted to left field for Conforto to end the inning. The Dodgers lead 3-0 after five complete innings.

Mookie Betts the hitter now and he bounces one to third. Chapman fields it on the charge and makes the long throw to first for the second out.

Bottom 5th

Gavin Lux leads off for the Dodgers and he rips a sharp ground ball to first. Flores fields it and takes it to the bag. One down.

Wilmer Flores up now and Dave Roberts will leave Paxton in. That kind of makes sense, with Flores struggling today and against Paxton in general. Flores grounds the 0-2 delivery to second and Lux goes to first to end the inning. The Dodgers get out of a jam as the Giants squander their opportunity, stranding three base runners.

Matt Chapman the hitter now with runners on the corners. He works the count full before another payoff delivery misses inside and Paxton has walked the bases loaded.

Mound visit

Pitching coach Mark Prior will trot out to have a word with Paxton and see if he can settle him down. There is some activity in the Dodger bullpen, but they would like Paxton to get out of this inning if he can.

4-6-3 Double play

Austin Slater up now with no outs and runners on first and second. This is the best threat that the Giants have mounted so far.

Slater grounds one to second for Lux. The flip to second for one and on to first for the double play. Nick Ahmed is at third on the play.

Jung Hoo Lee nubs a little single up the middle that squirts past the converging infielders. Nick Ahmed goes to second.

Top 5th

Nick Ahmed leads off and taps a soft one in front of the plate. Will Smith comes out and misfields it. Ahmed is safe with swinging bunt. I think they scored it a hit but for me that was a fielding error by the catcher.

Chris Taylor up now and he rips a ground ball to third. Chapman fields it and goes to first to end the inning.

Bottom 4th

Teoscar Hernández leads off for LA and he works the count to 2-2, fouling off three pitches. The eighth pitch of the at-bat is on the ground to short. Ahmed goes to first for the out.

Thairo Estrada up now and he goes down swinging on a cheesy knuckle curve. That was sick!

Michael Conforto the hitter now and he works the count full before whiffing at a nice fastball for strike three. Two gone.

Top 4th

Tom Murphy leads things off for the Giants here in the fourth and he lifts a fly ball to left, but Taylor catches up to it in front of the warning track for the first out.

Max Muncy the hitter now and he lifts a deep fly ball to left but Conforto camps out under it and puts it away to end the inning. But the Dodgers tack on two more, stretching their lead to 3-0.

Will Smith to bat and the Dodgers have runners on the corners and one out. Smith Fouls two sliders back and is in a hole here 0-2.

Another breaking ball, another foul. A fastball misses outside. 1-2

Another breaking ball and this time Smith lifts it to deep right field. Slater catches it, but Ohtani tags and scores from third.

Freddie Freeman the hitter and he fouls two back and watches a ball inside. 1-2

He rips the next pitch up the middle for a single and Betts comes in from third!

Double

Shohei Ohtani up now and he rips a hard shot over the bag at first base for a double! Betts rounds third but decides to hold up there and the Dodgers have runners on second and third with one out!

Mookie Betts the hitter now and he works the count full before Winn's payoff is a sinker that misses by a fraction off the outside edge for a one out walk.

Bottom 3rd

Gavin Lux leads things off for the Dodgers and he can't get a bead on the cutter, swinging and missing at three of them. One down.

Wilmer Flores to bat with two on and two out. He works the count to 2-2 before shooting one up the middle, but Lux is shaded over that way and fields it, going to first to end the inning. The Giants strand two.

Matt Chapman stands in and he is very choosy, running the count full before Paxton's payoff delivery is fouled back. We do it again.

Another payoff, another fastball, but this one is lasered into right field for a single. Slater advances to second.

Jorge Soler up now and he gets into a hole 1-2 before fouling one into Will Smith's mitt for strike three. Two gone.

Austin Slater the hitter now and he runs the count full before the payof misses in the dirt for the free pass.

Top 3rd

Back to the top of the order and Jung Hoo Lee will get things going for the Giants here in the third. He bounces a roller to second. Lux goes to first and it is JUUUUST in time. Lee has some wheels, but not quite enough this time. One down.

Chris Taylor the hitter and he watches a strike and can't hold off the check swing to fall into an 0-2 hole. He foul tips one into the catcher's mitt and that ends the inning. They go down 1-2-3 in the second and the Dodgers still lead 1-0

James Outman up now and Winn tries that slider again on the first pitch, but Outman lines out sharply to right but right at Austin Slater. Two gone.

Bottom 2nd

Teoscar Hernández leads things off for the Dodgers and he runs the count to 2-2 before chasing a lovely low slider for strike three.

Leadoff triple

Here is that leadoff shot. Lee is quick and nearly got to it. But Betts is speedy too and made them pay.

Nick Ahmed stands in now and misses one and fouls one off to fall behind 0-2. At least he got the bat on it!

Holding off a breaking ball in the dirt, the count is 1-2.

Ahmed dribbles a little nubber up the first base line. Freeman fields it and applies the tag to end the inning.

Thairo Estrada up now with one out and one on. He does get the lumber off his shoulder, but to no avail, swinging at breaking balls both high and low to go down on three pitches.

Michael Conforto the hitter now and he never gets the bat off his shoulder. A strike, a ball, and two more strikes sits Conforto down. You have to swing the lumber!

Top 2nd

Tom Murphy leads off for the Giants and he woks the count full before Paxton's payoff delivery misses high for a leadoff walk.

Max Muncy up now and he swings at a fastball and two splitters to go down swinging on three pitches. That ends the inning but not before the Dodgers get on the board, leading 1-0.

Will Smith stands in and works the count full before slapping the payoff delivery into center for a single.

Shohei Ohtani up now and he smashes the 1-1 delivery sharply on the ground to second. Estrada goes to first with it and Mookie Betts scores on the play. Two batters and the Dodgers are on the board!

Keaton Winn takes the mound for the Giants and Mookie Betts will lead things off for the Dodgers. He works the count to 2-2 before ripping a splitter to left. Michael Conforto and Jung Hoo Lee are both there and Lee reaches for it but can't get to it. It squirts off his glove and gets past Conforto. Betts is speedy and is in there with a leadoff triple!

Wilmer Flores stands in and Paxton delivers a fastball that Flores pops up to second. Gavin Lux puts it away to end the inning.

Matt Chapman the hitter and he watches four balls go by, fastballs and a knuckle curve that misses low for a two out walk. Jung Hoo Lee goes to second.

Jorge Soler up now and he pops the first pitch high into foul territory next to first base. Freddie Freeman is there for the second out.

Austin Slater the hitter now and he works the count to 2-2 before lifting a fly ball out to right for Teoscar Hernández. One down.

PITCHING

The Giants will go with Keaton Winn, who is making a season debut after suffering elbow soreness in spring training. After a rookie 2023 that saw him put up respectable numbers, he will likely be on a tight pitch count.

The Dodgers will look to James Paxton who is also coming back from injury. He had a respectable season with the Red Sox last year after missing most of the previous two seasons due to injury.

Look for both teams to be working a bullpen strategy from early innings.

Welcome to the Diario AS USA live commentary of Game 1 of the three Game home stand as the Giants travel down the coast to play the Dodgers in Chavez Ravine.

This is the first meeting of this NL West rivalry this season, with the Dodgers taking the 2023 series, seven games to six. In the Cactus League this spring, the two clubs split with each taking two of four games

The Dodgers have been hot of late despite a gruelling pre season and Opening Day schedule that saw them Travel to Seoul, South Korea to kick things off against the Padres. And while things are always going to be Business as usual amongst professionals, it remains to be seen if the fallout from the Shohei Ohtani saga has any effect on their performance.

So far, Ohtani hasn’t unleashed that fearsome batting power this season, but the Dodgers are a threat from top to bottom, with an added sting in the tail as Kike Hernandez already hitting three home runs off the bench.

The Giants have been in full rebuild mode for a few years now and their current look is an intriguing one. Jung Hoo Lee is exciting leading off for them and while they may not have the power that they almost had in their grasp just a few seasons ago, when they had both Juan Soto and Carlos Correa under contract, they are poised to make things at least a little messy in the NL West.
