Eva Mendes praises Ryan Gosling’s ‘SNL’ sketch about having a Cuban wife: ‘Made this Cuban Mami so happy’
Eva Mendes might not have accompanied Ryan Gosling to his recent “Saturday Night Live” hosting gig but the actress still had nothing but great things to say about the “La La Land” star’s performance.
Gosling hosted the sketch show for the third time on Saturday and seemingly gave a nod to his leading lady, who is of Cuban descent, by doing a skit revolving around a man who developed a Latino accent after marrying a Cuban woman.
The sketch opened with Gosling sitting around a table alongside cast members Marcello Hernández and Kenan Thompson, who played characters from Cuba and the Dominican Republic, respectively.
When a waiter asked where they were from, Thompson pointed at Gosling and said he was “from Tennessee, but ever since he married a Cuban woman, he different.”
“A Cuban wife can change you,” Gosling joked, calling himself a “Cuban papi.”
As Hernández and Gosling tried to convince Thompson to go out to a club with them, the former even name-dropped Mendes, causing the Oscar nominee to crack a smile.
“Tonight is gonna be crazy, man. Many celebrities gonna be there, man,” the funnyman, 26, said. “There’s gonna be Eva Mendes, Margot Robbie is gonna be there, the original dog from ‘Beethoven’ gonna be there.”
The funny skit was a hit with the audience and Mendes, who gave it her stamp of approval on Instagram Tuesday.
“Coño! My Cuban Papi made this Cuban Mami so happy with this!!” she captioned the video. “Years of hanging out with my Dad paid off.”
Mendes also thanked Hernández for seemingly conceptualizing the skit — and giving her a shoutout.
“Gracias to the super talented @marcellohdz for this skit. The way you say ‘Eva Mendes’ 😂!” she added. “And @kenanthompson always crushing. Can’t wait for this trio’s next reunion. ❤️”
Mendes and Gosling met while filming “The Place Beyond the Pines” in the early 2010s. Despite joking about being married to a Cuban woman in the sketch, the ultra-private pair — who share two daughters — have never confirmed their marital status.

While the “Hitch” star didn’t mind playing a role in her long-time partner’s hosting gig, Taylor Swift also gave Gosling a shoutout for putting a “Barbie”-inspired spin on her song “All Too Well” in his opening monologue.
“Ken and I, we had to break up. Letting go feels like a breakup,” Gosling joked. “For processing a breakup there’s really only one thing that can help: the music of the great Taylor Swift.”
Gosling then sat down at a piano and launched into a rendition of the 2012 hit, swapping out the lyrics to reflect his experience filming the Greta Gerwig masterpiece.
Even his “Fall Guy” co-star Emily Blunt got in on the action, telling the actor it was time “to move on.”
The following day, the 14-time Grammy winner responded to a clip of Gosling’s monologue on X.
“All Too Well (Ryan and Emily’s Version) !!!” she wrote. “Watch me accidentally catch myself singing this version on tour. This monologue is EVERYTHING.”
