Erik ten Hag sacked by Manchester United
The inevitable has come to pass as Manchester United confirm that Dutch coach Erik ten Hag has been relieved of his duties at the club with Sunday’s defeat at the hands of West Ham United the final straw.
In a brief statement issued on Monday the club wished Ten Hag well for the future and confirmed that former player Ruud Van Nistelrooy would be drafted in to look after the first team on an interim basis.
Full Man United statement:
“Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager.
Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.
Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.”
Worst Premier League start
The Dutchman has the unenvious accolade of overseeing United’s worst start to a Premier League, twice with the Red Devils start to the 2024-25 season worse than their opening campaign last season.
At present the Old Trafford side languish in 14th place with just three wins, two draws and four defeats in the opening nine Games.
Things are not so rosy in the Europa League where, after three Games United have yet to record a win following three draws in their opening three Games as part of the new expanded ‘Swiss Model’ league format.
