Erik ten Hag defends under-fire Marcus Rashford after Chelsea criticism
Erik ten Hag insists Marcus Rashford still has "big motivation" to play for Manchester United after the under-fire forward's work rate in Thursday's 4-3 defeat to Chelsea was criticised.
Rashford, who was dropped to the bench for the start of the Game, saw one passage of his 24-minute cameo go viral on social media. The 26-year-old can be seen jogging and failing to press Chelsea as they came forwards in search of an equaliser.
Asked about the criticism sent Rashford's way, Ten Hag was adamant he has no doubts about the forward's desire to work hard for the club.
"I think lately his form is progressing and so the time will always be right," Ten Hag began. "I think he has a big motivation because he wants to be successful with us.
"He wants to score goals but he wants to win trophies and contribute and we still have a chance in the FA Cup. He wants to fight for a Champions League spot and the Euros are coming so I will say his motivation should be high.
"And the form, that is a moment and he can change the momentum always. Before Brentford, he scored three goals in three Games.”
Even before the Game, Rashford was under scrutiny by United greats Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand. The former admitted concerns about Rashford's happiness, while the latter claimed a move away from Manchester may be required.
Rashford's brother and agent, Dwaine Maynard, took to social media to call out Neville and Ferdinand's comments.
"I completely understand podcasts and how they work but if you have genuine concerns, pick up the phone," Maynard wrote.
"We know each other or have crossed paths. Airing so called concerns for the public to have an opinion is bad mind and for clickbait in my eyes."
