England goalkeeper set to miss Euro 2024 with injury
Crystal Palace goalkeeper Sam Johnstone is set miss Euro 2024 after being ruled out for the rest of the season due to injury.
The 31-year-old was forced to leave the England squad on Sunday in order to see a specialist, and has now been ruled out for the foreseeable after having surgery on an elbow injury.
Johnstone, who has made 23 appearances for his club this season, has four England caps to date. He was expected to be Jordan Pickford's understudy when the squad head to Germany in the summer.
The shot-stopper has put in some impressive displays for the Selhurst Park club recently, but will now enter a recovery period that will see him sit on the sidelines for three to four months. Fellow England international Dean Henderson will replace Johnstone between the sticks at Palace.
Everton's Pickford has been England's number one for a while. Despite a poor error against Belgium during recent friendlies, his position is safe.
Pickford will be a trusted choice on the plane to Germany, winning 60 international caps since his debut in 2017. He became a national hero during Euro 2020, assisting the team to the final of the tournament.
This year he'll be hoping to go one step further with the Three Lions by helping them to their first major silverware since 1966.
Pickford's closest challenger comes in the form of Arsenal's Aaron Ramsdale, who has made just 11 appearances for his club across all comPetitions this season. Ramsdale has gotten used to his position on the bench, with the Gunners' summer signing David Raya winning the number one jersey under Mikel Arteta.
