Chelsea head coach Emma Hayes says the decision to rule out Niamh Charles’ goal for offside in the club’s 2-2 with Real Madrid on Wednesday was “embarrassing”.

Charles’ volley was disallowed, despite replays showing her to be in an offside decision.

Future USWNT boss Hayes, said: “It is embarrassing. I had to check why it was disallowed. Was it Niamh? No. Was it Sam [Kerr] interfering with the goalkeeper? She was about seven yards away, nowhere near the keeper.

“I cannot understand the decision whatsoever.”

Carmona opens scoring for Real Madrid

Spain World Cup winner Olga Carmona gave Las Blancas the lead before Chelsea went in front with headers from Charles and Australia’s Sam Kerr.

Carmona’s second goal of the night - a penalty - was another talking point in the European clash in Madrid after Jessie Fleming was adjudged to have taken down Athenea del Castillo.

A frustrated Hayes explained that she believed the foul was not in the penalty area.

She added: “I could see from the bench that the tackle was outside the box.

“I’m absolutely shocked that those managing the game couldn’t see that.

“Of course, maybe Jessie shouldn’t lunge in that area but it happens clearly outside the box.

“I think we’ve been robbed of what was a 3-1 Game.”

Wednesday’s earlier Game in the pool saw Paris FC lose 2-1 at home to Swedish side BK Hacken.
