Ederson injured against Newcastle: what injury did he suffer and how long will be out?
Kevin De Bruyne is back after a length layoff, while Erling Haaland should return to action before too much longer from a foot problem. But just when things where looking up for Manchester City and Pep Guardiola on the injury front, they’ve been dealt a new blow by goalkeeper Ederson.
What happened to Ederson against Newcastle?
The Brazilian was forced off the field in just the eighth minute of Manchester City’s Premier League clash away to Newcastle United after a collision in one of his first involvements of the Game, which came after a delayed offside flag.
During a frantic start at St James’ Park, Ederson came off worst after careering into teammate Kyle Walker and Newcastle’s Sean Longstaff, seemingly suffering an injury to his left knee. After receiving treatment on the field, the 30-year-old initially attempted to play on but soon slumped to the ground once more having almost gifted The Magpies a goal due to his reluctance to kick the ball with his left foot.
Who is City backup goalkeeper Stefan Ortega?
The former Benfica man immediately signalled to Guardiola and the City backroom staff that he wasn’t able to continue, with backup Stefan Ortega coming on in his place. The German has only made five Premier League appearances for the reigning Champions League holders signing joining from Bundesliga club Arminia Bielefeld in 2022 but could now be called upon for a run in the team. Prior to signing for City, 31-year-old Ortega had only ever played in his home country, with 10 of his 12 previous seasons coming Germany’s second tier and below.
Although nothing has as yet been confirmed as to the seriousness of Ederson’s injury, the City goalkeeper looked to be in significant pain on his way off the field and Guardiola faces a nervous wait for a diagnosis for his undisputed number one.
