Robinson Canó representing the last chance for Licey and he crushes a shot to deep right! It is going back! Ricardo Céspedes is back to the wall, leaps and makes the catch! That is it! Federales win!

Héctor Rodríguez up now with a runner on second and one out. Licey are down to their last two lives.

Bonilla strikes Rodriguez out with a nasty curve ball in the dirt, three straight pitches, three strikes and it is two outs!

Bonifacio reaches out and pokes a breaking ball to center field. Santos charges and makes the catch! He has Alcántara a long way off second but takes two looks at the ball in his glove, hesitating just a bit too long and Alcántara manages to get back to the bag.

Stolen base

Emilio Bonifacio the hitter now and he bunts foul the first pitch. Bold strategy.

The 0-1 delivery is in the dirt and Alcántara takes off for second. The throw is not in time. Stolen base!

Top 9th

The last chance for the Dominican Republic and Sergio Alcántara leads off. A soft tapper to third, kind of a swinging bunt, sees Wright charge and throw to first, but Bethancourt can't handle it! Safe at first!

Jean Arnaez up now and he taps a grounder to short. The flip to second gets the force out to end the inning but Panama tack on one more, leading 3-1 now.

Panama scores!

Johan Camargo the hitter with men on the corners and two outs. He rips a single to left field. Córdoba scores from third! Bethancourt moves up 90 feet.

Christian Bethancourt up now and he hits a pop fly to left center. It falls in! The outfielders were playing so deep, respecting his power that nobody could get there. Bethancourt is in with a single and Córdoba makes it to third.

Ivan Herrera the hitter now with a runner on first and one out. Bonilla goes after him and strikes him out looking on three pitches!

Incredible! I'm not sure what they saw that made them think that he was out, but the call on the field stands!

Allen Córdoba up now and he hits a slow roller into the hole at short. Alcántara decides to go to second for Wright and the call is out. This is going to be reviewed and overturned. He looked safe.

Bottom 8th

Joshwan Wright leads off and he hits a dribbler to third base, but Gutierrez can't field it cleanly. Wright gets an infield hit to start things off.

Junior Lake the batter and he bangs a lined shot to right field but Céspedes is able to track it and make a leaping catch to end the inning.

Michael De La Cruz up now and he chops a lazy roller to short. Camargo goes to first and gets the out. Hernández advances to second on the play.

Yadiel Hernández the hitter now and he loops one into center field for a single.

They review the play but it is upheld on review. One away.

Top 8th

Dawel Lugo leads off and he works the count to 2-2 before lifting a bloop into shallow cneter field. Camargo rushes back as Santos comes in. It comes off Camargo's glove and falls in for a hit. Santos fields it and guns it to second to get Lugo who was trying to stretch it into a double. Out!

Jahdiel Santamaria the hitter and he gives one a ride to deep left field, spreading it out a bit. Yadiel Hernández gets to it and puts it away to end the inning.

Ricardo Céspedes up now and he ropes a blast to deep right field! It is way back! Junior Lake is running back, tracking it and he catches up to it on the warning track! Great hit and great catch!

Bottom 7th

Kelvin Gutierrez takes over at third base for Dawel Lugo as Johnny Santos leads off for Panama. He works the count to 2-2 before rolling one out to third, giving Gutierrez his first test. The throw to first is in time. One away.

Ramón Hernández to the plate and he slaps a roller to short stop. Camargo goes the short way and gets the force out at second to end the inning.

Robinson Canó the hitter and he ropes a shot to left field for a two out single.

Héctor Rodríguez up now and he goes down swinging at three beautiful breaking balls. Two gone.

Top 7th

Emilio Bonifacio leads off and he works a 2-2 count before chasing a curve ball up in the zone for strike three.

Blast by the Marlin!

Bethancourt goes deep.

Jean Arnaez the hitter and he reaches out for a slider and lifts it to second base to end the inning. But Christian Bethancourt nudges the Federales back in front with a solo home run! After six, Panama 2, Dominican Republic 1.

Johan Camargo up now and he taps a slow roller to second for Canó. The throw to first gets the out. Two down.

HOME RUN PANAMA!

Christian Bethancourt now up and he drives the second pitch to center field. Rodriguez is tracking it, to the wall, he leaps, it is gone! It cleared the wall by six or seven inches! Solo shot and Panama take the lead again!

Bottom 6th

Ivan Herrera leads off against the new pitcher and he crushes the first pitch, driving it to the wall in center field, but Rodriguez catches up to it for the first out.

Pitching change

Jorge Martínez is done for the evening, giving way to Lisalverto Bonilla on the mound.

Sergio Alcántara the hitter and he lifts a towering fly ball to right field, but it is taken by Céspedes to end the inning.

Junior Lake up now and he works the count full. Romero's payoff misses low and Lake draws the walk.

Double play!

Michael De La Cruz up now and after an opeing ball, Romero's fifth in a row, he finally finds a strike with a big 12-6 curve.

Another ball and strike and the count is 2-2.

A fastball misses low and the count is full. The payoff delivery from Romero is blown past a swinging De La Cruz. Hernández was running on the play and the throw from Herrera has him dead to rights! Strike em out, throw em out! Double play!

Top 6th

Yadiel Hernández will lead off against the new pitcher and Romero has trouble finding the strike zone, walking Hernández on four straight pitches.

Pitching change

After a great opening by Ernesto Silva, the Federales will bring on Davis Romero to take over on the mound.

At the halfway point, we are still all knotted up at 1-1.

Allen Córdoba to the plate and he chases three sliders to go down swinging. Martínez strikes out the side!

Joshwan Wright up now and after working the count to 2-2, he got jelly-legged by a changeup for strike three.

Jahdiel Santamaria will lead things off in the fifth for Panama. He works a 2-2 count before chasing a nasty slider for strike three.

Dawel Lugo the hitter and he lifts a high fly ball to shallow center field. Johnny Santos charges and makes a great sliding catch to end the inning.

Ramón Hernández up now and he draws the walk on five pitches.

Robinson Canó up now and he taps the 2-2 delivery to short stop for Camargo. The throw to first gets out number two.

Héctor Rodríguez leads off and chops the first delivery to first base. Bethancourt fields it and steps on the bag for the first out.

Ricardo Céspedes up now and after working a 1-2 count, he chases a high fastball for strike three to end the inning.

Johnny Santos the hitter and he draws a walk on four pitches. Martínez wanted to stay away from that bat!

Jean Arnaez up now and he rips a breaking ball straight back up the middle. Canó covers a lot of ground and gets to it. The throw is in time and it is two down!

Johan Camargo will lead off in the fourth and he works the count full before lifting the payoff delivery to center field. A routine fly ball and it is one out.

If he misses this, it is extra bases for sure!

Emilio Bonifacio up now with De La Cruz at second and two outs. He chops one to third and Wright charges and makes the throw to first to end the inning.

Sergio Alcántara the hitter and he raps one right off the end of the barrel, rolling slowly to short stop. Camargo has no time for the play at second so goes to first and it is in time! What a throw!

Junior Lake up now and he lifts a foul ball straight up. Herrera drifts back and nabs it by the backstop for the first out.

Michael De La Cruz leads things off for Licey in the fourth. He runs the count full before the payoff from Silva juuuuusssssttttt misses outside for a leadoff walk.

The knock

Here is that home run shot by Santos!

Christian Bethancourt up now and he hits a long dinger to left! It is back, but not quite enough. Hernández catches up to it on the warning track to end the inning.

Ivan Herrera up now and he bangs one on the screws to left. A diving catch by hernández denies him extra bases! Great play!

Bottom 3rd

Allen Córdoba will lead things off for Panama here in the third and he works the count to 2-2 before chasing a peach of a slider for strike three.

Yadiel Hernández the hitter now with runners on first and second and two outs. He dribbles a little tapper to second and the throw to first ends the inning. But the Tigres have levelled the game at one run apiece!

Dominican Republic score!

Now with runners on the corners and two outs, Lugo goes inside out on a breaking ball to center field for a single. Bonifacio scores from third! Canó moves up to second. The game is even again at 1-1!

Stolen base

Dawel Lugo up now with runners on first and second and two outs. He works the count to 1-2 and Bonifacio takes off for third. Catcher Ivan Herrera bobbles the transfer and there is no throw. Stolen base!

Ramón Hernández jumps on the first pitch and lines a shot to center field, but right at Santos. Two down.

Robinson Canó up now and he taps a single through to left field, moving Bonifacio up 90 feet.

Héctor Rodrígues up now and he rips a lined shot to right field. Ricardo Céspedes charges and catches it on the run! Bonifacio is a long way off the bag at first and Céspedes tries to gun him, but juggles the transfer. Oh, my! He might have had a shot to get the double play if he transferred it cleanly!

Top 3rd

Emilio Bonifacio will lead things off for the Tigres in the third and he watches four straight balls go by for a leadoff walk.

Joshwan Wright the hitter and he runs the count to 2-2 before a beautiful slider catches him swinging at strike three to end the inning. But not before the Federales manage to jump out front 1-0!

Jahdiel Santamaria up now and he slaps a ground ball to first. Hernández goes to second for one, the throw back to first is not in time.

Ricardo Céspedes goes after the first pitch as well, tapping it into right field for a single.

HOME RUN PANAMA!

Johnny Santos jumps on the first ball and crushes it! That is a long way back! Way way way out of here! Home run Panama and the Federales draw first blood!

Jean Arnaez leads things off in the second for Panama and he rips a rocket to third base, but right at Lugo. The throw to first gets the first out.

Sergio Alcántara to the plate and he hits one on the screws but Camargo is there, leaps and comes down with the catch to end the inning. Two left on, and still no score.

Junior Lake up now and he jumps on the first pitch, ripping it through the gap at third for a single. De La Cruz advances to second on the play.

Michael De La Cruz the hitter and he slaps a ground ball to first. Bethancourt goes to second for one, but there is not enough time to come back for the second. A 3-6 fielder's choice.

Yadiel Hernández up now and he reaches out to poke a low splitter into center field for a single.

Top 2nd

Dawel Lugo will lead things off for Licey in the second and he gets under one and lifts it high to first base for the first out.

Johan Camargo up now with runners on first and second and two out. The first pitch runs the inside rail for a strike. Camargo chases a low splitter and is in a hole 0-2.

Martínez delivers a fatball and Camargo slaps it to third base, but right at Lugo, who goes to first to end the inning.

The slider from Martínez misses low and outside to level the count at 2-2. Again he tries the slider, but Bethancourt doesn't bite. Full count.

The payoff delivery to Bethancourt misses and he draws the walk.

Stolen base

Christian Bethancourt up now and with the count 1-1, Herrera takes off for second. The throw from De La Cruz is great, but Herrera had an even better jump. Safe!

Ivan Herrera to hit and he slaps one deep into the hole at shortstop. The throw from Sergio Alcántara is not in time! He beat it out for an infield hit.

Joshwan Wright leads off with a high pop fly into foul territory behind first base. Ramón Hernández drifts over and pulls it down for out number one.

Sorry about the delay! Technical difficulties in the Diario AS USA office meant that we missed the top of the first inning. Emilio Bonifacio lead off with a triple, but was followed up by three soft groundouts back to the pitcher from Héctor Rodrígues, Robinson Canó, and Ramón Hernández meaning that the runner was left stranded on third.

We join the action live in the bottom of the first inning.

The Federales are on the field, Ernesto Silva is on the mound. The house is packed and the umpires are ready as Emilio Bonifacio will lead off for the Tigres del Licey.

PITCHING

The Federales will start former longtime minor leaguer Ernesto Silva, who spent five years in the minors before returning to the Panamanian League. His numbers are solid, if not entirely earth shattering, but he is a safe pair of hands and can be a deep starter for Panama.

Across the lines from him will be Jorge Martínez who likewise spent three years in AAA ball before going to independent leagues in the USA and the Dominican League. He has stable, if not exactly dominant, punchout power and can be expected to give the Tigres a few good innings.

Welcome to the Diario AS USA live commentary of the 2024 Caribbean Series as the Dominican Republic’s Tigres del Licey take on Panama’s Federales de Chiriqui in Miami’s LoanDepot Park.

This 2024 Caribbean Series has been amazing on so many levels already, and here we have a steamer in the making.

In the early game today, Curaçao shocked the world by eliminating one of the favorites to win the whole thing when they beat Puerto Rico 2-0, leaving the Criollos de Caguas to lick their wounds and head back home.

Until last night, Panama were in the driving seat of this tournament. But a loss to Venezuela sees them wobbled, a little punch drunk, and the Dominican Republic would love nothing more than to set them up for the knockout punch.

A win tonight by Tigres would see the Panamanians drop to fourth place, setting up a rematch of the Dominican Republic with Curaçao in the semi finals, and leaving Panama to face Venezuela, the more dangerous of the two possible opponents.

A win by Panama could see them take second place and mean that they would face Curaçao in the semi finals. But everything is to play for and this tournament is still wide open.
