Dak Prescott makes NFL history with touchdowns on consecutive days
The Dallas Cowboys left it late, very late, to secure a 20-17 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday evening.
The Cowboys’ trip to Acrisure Stadium in Pittburgh, Pennsylvania was due to kick off at 8:20pm (ET) but severe weather conditions forced officials to push the start time. With 60mph winds and heavy hail for much of the evening, it wasn’t until 9:45pm that the action could begin.
This delay meant that the Game actually ran into the early hours of Monday morning, allowing Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott to record a rare NFL feat. Prescott threw two touchdown passes, one before and one after midnight. This means that he holds the rare distinction of throwing NFL touchdowns on two consecutive days.
“With the delays, one of those games you’ll never forget,” the Dallas QB said after the game. “I just kept saying, ‘Let’s make it one to remember.’ I think we did that.”
Is Dak Prescott living up to NFL-record salary?
Ahead of the 2024 season the Cowboys bet big on Dak Prescott as the future of the franchise. A fourth-round pick at the 2016 NFL Draft, Prescott is now in his ninth season with the Cowboys and led the league for passing touchdowns in 2023.
In September the 31-year-old signed a four-year contract extension worth $240 million. That averages out at $60 million per year over the course of the deal, making his annual earnings the highest in NFL history. He surpasses Bengals’ Joe Burrow, Jaguars’ Trevor Lawrence, and Packers’ Jordan Love, all of whom receive $55 million annually.
Sunday’s win takes the Cowboys to a 3-2 record but Prescott’s performance still appeared shaky. He threw two interceptions and a lost fumble, robbing his side of offensive momentum against a resolute Steelers defence.
Nevertheless, Prescott came up trumps at the end with a 15-play touchdown drive that ended with a neat pass to Jalen Tolbert in the dying seconds. That clutch gene has always been a key part of Prescott’s game and Sunday’s match-winning drive was the 23rd of his NFL career.
“It’s one of our most comfortable plays,” Prescott said of the dramatic final drive. “It was special to get it back to Tolbert. He did a great job coming across the field, getting open. Offensive line did a great job on that play of allowing me to stay in the pocket... The persistence and resilience of the team just really showed on that drive.”
