Dak Prescott contract extension update: What did the Cowboys quarterback say about Jerry Jones?
Sometimes Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says some pretty outlandish things. For us as sports fans, it can just be entertaining to listen to and easy to roll our eyes. For members of the team, however, I suppose some things he says could really get under their skin (and on their nerves).
Exhibit A:
That’s perhaps why quarterback Dak Prescott just plain doesn’t listen to what Jerry Jones says.
“I stopped, honestly, listening to things [Jerry Jones] says to the media a long time ago. It doesn’t really hold weight with me,” Prescott said.
What Dak Prescott said about his lack of a contract extension with the Cowboys
All of this discussion comes from the fact that Prescott has not yet been given a contract extension. From Jones’ point of view, it’s not necessary to give Prescott an extension before the start of the regular season on September 8. Prescott is entering the last year of his current contract (four-year, $160 million) without the ability to be franchise tagged or traded, meaning he will become a free agent in 2025 if he does not extend with the Cowboys.
Still, though Jones insists he wants Prescott to remain in Dallas, he also insists there’s no rush to get it done.
“We’re continuing to, first of all, all of us focus on the next 10 days to two weeks: the opening game. That’s taking priority over [everything]. Lamb wasn’t here. Dak is here,” said Jones. “So, really, we have no more to do in those significant things that we talk about every time we meet to have this season on go mode and engaged, so it’ll remain like it’s been.”
That’s the kind of noise from Jerry that Dak likes to tune out, and rightfully so. It can’t feel great to hear that keeping him in Dallas is not even close to the top of Jones’ priorities.
For his part, Prescott leaves the Business side of things to his agent, Todd France. He just tries to stay focused on Football. He did say, however, that not getting the contract done before the season would show something...
“I don’t need it [done by the start of the season]. I think it says a lot if it is or it isn’t. However doesn’t really matter to me, to be honest with you,” Prescott said.
But if it isn’t done, what would that say, exactly?
“Just how people feel,” he said.
It is sounding increasingly like Prescott may go to another team in 2025, but Jones is nothing if not king of the last-minute deals, something he seems to oddly pride himself on. There are just nine days until the Cowboys open the regular season in Cleveland against the Browns. But for Prescott, it’s all about the now.
“I’m blessed to play this Game, to be in year nine, to do what I do and be as Healthy as I am,” Prescott said. “The experience that I’ve had, I’m blessed to play this Game. I get paid a lot of money to do it. I’ve already gotten paid, to get paid again is just part of it. I’m due up for it, whether that’s signing here or somewhere else that I don’t care to think about at this moment. It’s all part of it.”
“It’s about now, period.”
