Could the Kansas City Chiefs relocate to Dallas? Mayor Eric Johnson wants it to happen

Though it will have to be seen to be believed, the Kansas City Chiefs may be in the market for a new stadium following a less than ideal vote on a sales tax. To that end, Dallas’ mayor has wasted no time in inviting the franchise to take up residence in his city, but could two of the NFL’s biggest brands really play in the same city? The funny thing is, they did before.

Dallas’ mayor Eric Johnson wants the Chiefs to come ‘home’

So, as you know by now, a vote on sales tax earlier this week in Jackson County, Missouri, did not go in favor of the Kansas City Chiefs. Had it passed, the vote would have opened the door to increased funding for the major renovations that the Chiefs have planned for the Arrowhead Stadium as well as those which MLB’s Kansas City Royals have in mind. What that means is that both franchises will now be on the hunt for financial aid elsewhere, a fact that has led to speculation that one or both of them could relocated to another city. Indeed, that’s something that even Chiefs president, Mark Donovan admitted could be a possibility in the future.

If that proves to be the case, one city’s mayor has made it clear that he’d be happy to host the Chiefs. Speaking earlier this week, Dallas mayor Eric Johnson made a public statement about the Chiefs and their failed move following the vote in Jackson County and he left no doubt about the idea that he’d be happy to see the Chiefs return to the city where they were founded way back in 1960, only to move to Kansas City three years later in 1963. “Dallas was named the top sports city in the United States because we play to win,” Johnson said on Wednesday. “As I have said previously, our market is big enough, growing enough, and loves football more than enough to support a second NFL team - especially a franchise (and an owner) with deep roots here.”

To be absolutely clear, there has been no indication that such a move is even being discussed, however, it would be remiss to ignore the obvious logic involved in the situation. For starters, Texas loves its Football. Where Dallas specifically is concerned, not only is it host to ‘America’s team’, the Dallas Cowboys, but it also has an available stadium in the Cotton Bowl, which actually hosted the Dallas Texans before, and yes that is the same team that later became known as the Kansas City Chiefs. At this point, this is purely speculation which is to say we can’t expect to hear too much on this for the moment, but should this idea gain traction, one has to imagine that it won’t be long before we hear the likes of Cowboys owner, Jerry Jones, weighing in on what would be arguably one of the biggest moves in Sports for many years, and one that would put even more pressure on his franchise to deliver a title that has eluded it for the last 28 years.
