The Philadelphia 76ers just beat the Clippers in a serious NBA odds upset on Sunday and will be hoping to make it back-to-back wins when the two teams square off for the second time in four days on Wednesday, March 27.

Are the Clippers in as much trouble as it looks like? Or can L.A. steady the ship with a strong performance against the undermanned Sixers?

My how the Los Angeles Clippers have fallen. Once a lock for homecourt advantage in the first round, now they are looking over their shoulder at the Dallas Mavericks and New Orleans Pelicans determined to push them down into the sixth seed.

The Clippers have had a rough run of it lately, spotlighted by an NBA worst defensive rating over the last two weeks. They lost to tonight’s opponent, the Philadelphia 76ers, in dispiriting fashion at home just a few days ago and followed that up with a blowout loss to the Indiana Pacers.

And yet I like them to cover on Wednesday against the same team that just blew the doors off them on Saturday. Why? I think those two games, while not encouraging for L.A., were mostly anomalies.

Humans love to assign causality to things that are fundamentally outside our control. So, while it’s easy to look at the Clippers' recent defensive rating and assume they’re playing horribly, I’m more inclined to think it’s closer to bad luck becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The Sixers were absurdly hot from deep in the last meeting, hitting 18 of their 37 outside attempts (48.6%). As a result they outscored the Clips by 24 points just from the 3-point line. Most teams are not winning a lot of games when the opposition hits that high a clip on that volume of threes.

But those performances aren’t representative of the Clippers nor the 76ers.

On the season Philadelphia is the seventh-worst shooting team by hit rate and also take the seventh-fewest. The Clippers by contrast have the third-best 3-point percentage and take more attempts than the Sixers. By any metric, Los Angeles is a better shooting team.

This one game seems like the ultimate flash-in-the-pan scoring outburst by the 76ers, not one that is easily replicable. Shooting well breeds confidence, just like shooting poorly invites self-doubt and disconnection on defense. 

The Clippers' defense has been shambolic lately on a statistical level, but I think that some of this is just bad luck that snowballed into poor effort. Only the very best teams can continue to play to their standard when the shooting disparity gets so large. 

Even with all of its talent Los Angeles is among that group. While that doesn’t bode well for the Clippers’ playoff chances, I think they’re much better than the 76ers in a regular season scenario. 

The bad taste of the loss to Philly and Tyronn Lue calling out his team as soft after the Pacers loss should also be strong motivators for L.A.

Outside of that one hot shooting Game against L.A., the Sixers offense has been DOA for the past few weeks. In six of their last 10 Games they’ve failed to break the century mark, and only against the Clippers did they score more than 105 points.

The Clippers' offense meanwhile has remained steady despite their defense getting shredded by hot opponent shooting. Per Cleaning the Glass their offensive rating over the past eight games is 120.2, seventh best in the Association in that span.
