The Boston Celtics won their 18th championship in franchise History on Monday evening.

While winning a title is always undeniably sweet, what made this particular ring all the sweeter was the fact that it came against Kyrie Irving.

Irving and the Celtics have a famously messy History, and as recently as this week, the mercurial star was still taking shots at his old squad.

Following their big win on Monday night, Boston fans decided to deliver a pretty emphatic two-word message to Irving.

Late last week Irving compared Celtics culture to a cult and suggested that he didn’t jive with it because he wasn’t willing to fall in line.

“You have to show your respect here,” Irving said.

“I think that’s what I struggled with initially, was figuring out how I’m going to be a great player here while winning championships and also leading a team and selflessly joining the Celtics’ organization or the cult that they have here.”

Irving noted that because he wasn’t willing to meet those expectations, he quickly found himself on the outs.

“That’s what they expect you to do as a player,” he continued.

“They expect you to seamlessly buy into the Celtics’ pride, buy into everything Celtics. And if you don’t, then you’ll be outed… I’m one of the people that’s on the outs.”

Now that the Celtics have triumphed so notably over Irving, it will be interesting to see if the feud between the two sides ultimately dies down a bit. Or will Irving always be persona non grata in Boston?

An answer one way or the other will come in the seasons ahead.
