The Carolina Panthers compiled a respectable 7-10 record in 2022, but all in all the 2-plus-year era with Matt Rhule as head coach was a complete disaster. Carolina can only hope that the Frank Reich-Bryce Young era lasts a lot longer. Reich is in as head coach and with him is Young, the rookie quarterback who was taken #1 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. The Panthers went on a bit of a spending spree during the offseason, as well, so expectations are finally beginning to climb.

Is Carolina on course for its first playoff berth since 2017? Let’s take a look at some of the odds and best bets to be made on the Carolina Panthers this year.

Carolina Panthers 2022 season recap

Rhule won 5 games in each of his first 2 seasons as head coach. Five games into the 2022 campaign, he was on pace to win even fewer (1-4). Team management had seen enough at that point and gave Rhule the boot, replacing him with Steve Wilks. Under Wilks the Panthers improved dramatically, going 6-6 over their last 12 contests. They might have even won the division if not for an absolutely absurd overtime loss at Atlanta in Week 10 and a blown double-digit lead in the fourth quarter of a Week 17 setback at Tampa Bay. Although it was another losing season in Carolina, some positive seeds were planted late in the year.

Carolina Panthers 2023 NFL season predictions

The Panthers finally decided that enough was enough – 5 losing seasons in a row and zero playoff wins since they made it to the Super Bowl in 2015. Rhule was fired in the early stages of 2022 and Carolina traded a whole host of assets to acquire the #1 pick from Chicago. To be exact, the Panthers sent wide receiver D.J. Moore to the Bears along with 4 draft picks (2 first-rounders and 2 second-rounders). In other words, Young had better deliver…and sooner rather than later.

Here are a couple of my predictions for the Carolina Panthers in 2023.

Best bet: Carolina Panthers over 7.5 wins (-120)

The good news for Young is that he doesn’t have to do it all for this team. Yes, he has to be good; but I don’t think he has to be great. Carolina was already a respectable squad in 2022 and it added plenty of impact free agents, mainly on the defensive side of the ball. Moreover, the NFC South is probably the worst division in Football and if you take a more in-depth look at the Panthers’ schedule they have a bunch of winnable home Games even outside of the division. I’m not sure that Young will set the world on fire in year 1, but the Panthers on the whole are good enough and the schedule is easy enough for some success to come right off the bat.

Carolina Panthers season record predictions

Obviously, it makes sense to correlate this pick with the above prediction of the Panthers going over 7.5 wins. Of course, I also have Atlanta winning the NFC South so I don’t want to go completely crazy on Carolina and call for double-digits in the win column. At +700 odds, I think 9-8 has the best value on the board and it really isn’t too much to ask of a team that appears to be on the rise.
