Can Wrexham make it to the Premier League?
Documentary-makers rejoice! Wrexham have secured promotion from League Two with a resounding 6-0 victory over Forest Green Rovers, their second successive promotion. The hosts proved far too strong at the Stok Racecourse, surging to a 4-0 lead at the break. Star striker Paul Mullin scored twice to set his team on the way and take his tally for the season to 25 goals in all comPetitions.
“Immensely proud of the lads today. If you look at the Tuesday performance and today, when it mattered most we put in two of our best performances of the season,” manager Phil Parkinson said after the Game. “Some of the Football was of a very high standard today.”
Which league will Wrexham play in next season?
Promotion from League Two at the first time of asking is an impressive achievement for Wrexham, even given the club’s new-found financial heft. They will play in League One next season where they look set to face old rivals Shrewsbury Town, a team that they have not played in a league fixture since 2007.
After years in the doldrums Wrexham are firmly on the rise, but how much further do they have to go before they are dining at the top table of English Football? Above League One is the notoriously unpredictable Championship and, above that, the all-powerful Premier League.
This second successive promotion puts Wrexham halfway to the Premier League. The path ahead gets even more difficult from here onwards but it’s a journey that Luton Town completed last year, going from the National League to the Premier League. Co-owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have big plans going forward.
Tonight, however, any future ambitions are a distant concern for all involved in Wrexham. After the Game Reynolds took to social media to say: “A few years ago, if you told me I would be crying tears of joy over a Football match taking place in North Wales, you would be Rob McElhenney. Congrats to Wrexham and to my co-chairman in crime. Double up the town! This is the ride of our lives”.
