Over Protection is “Not Recommended”: Embracing Risk for a Stronger Society

S&C guru Kevin Kearns believes that safety-first rules are making society weak and overly cautious. To truly succeed, you’ve got to live life to the fullest.

Recently, during a trip to California to present an MMA fitness concepts session, something struck me as I observed a BOSU ball. On the bottom, in bold letters, were the words “not recommended.” This piqued my curiosity. How often do we overlook these warnings that permeate our daily lives?

I’ve trained countless fighters, and many have confronted the ‘dark side’ or the ‘not recommended’ side of the BOSU. We are fostering a culture overly focused on what we shouldn’t do, which I find troubling. We need to shift from a mindset of avoidance to one of embracing challenges.

Moderation in Safety: A Balanced Approach

Both of my daughters ,when they were just 12 now 20’s ),were  involved in BWK martial arts and gymnastics. The first time I saw them climb a 20-foot rope, I was naturally anxious. However, the benefits of this experience outweighed the risks. Here’s why:

  1. The coaches are well-trained and reliable.
  2. They know when to push the kids and when to step back.
  3. My daughters are learning to understand and respect their limits.

If We Keep Worrying About What People Should Not Do, No One Will Ever Do Anything at All

In my school days, we had gym classes daily and frequent recesses. Today’s students might get gym once a week, if at all. How can we expect to cultivate Healthy habits with such restrictions? Physical activity is essential for Health and wellbeing, yet it seems increasingly sidelined.

Learning from the Experienced: Real-World Insights

I spoke with Kennedy Ladato my mentor , who shared a thought-provoking story from an NSCA conference. A 91-year-old man with an incredible grip, later revealed as a former world record holder, highlighted a critical point: longevity and vitality come from staying active and challenging oneself, not from avoiding all risks.

A Call to Action: Reassessing Our Approach to Safety and Fitness

At Burn With Kearns, we emphasize safe and effective training. However, we must also recognize the importance of calculated risks. Living in a litigious society, where even minor accidents lead to lawsuits, we are becoming paralyzed by fear.

We need to encourage more physical activity and less time spent being sedentary. Yes, injuries can happen, but learning to recover and continue is vital. How many times have you been injured and bounced back? As a parent, finding this balance can be challenging, but necessary for growth.

Conclusion: Embrace Life with Caution but Without Fear

Our global population is becoming increasingly sedentary. It’s crucial to strike a balance between protecting our children and allowing them to experience the challenges and joys of physical activity. By doing so, we foster resilience, strength, and a healthier future.

Ask yourself this: How have past challenges helped you grow? How many times have you come back stronger after a setback? Let’s focus on guiding our children to embrace challenges, learn from them, and grow stronger.

If we keep worrying about what people should not do, no one will ever do anything at all. Let’s teach our children to live fully and embrace life’s challenges, ensuring a robust and dynamic society for generations to come.
