After decades in the fitness industry, I have  seen many trends come and go. What remains constant is the value of using varied equipment to target different muscle groups and improve functional fitness. For those in the 40+ age group, this approach is particularly beneficial as it helps to prevent injuries, improve joint health, and enhance balance and coordination.

The 1-2 Punch Workout: A Routine for Resilience and Strength

We developed the “1-2 Punch Workout,” a circuit that leverages the BOSU ball, AirFit trainer, and other simple tools to deliver a full-body workout that builds strength, stability, and endurance. Here’s how you can adapt it to suit your needs:

1. One-Legged Squats

  • How to: Stand on the BOSU and hold the AirFit. Slowly lower yourself into a squat, going as low as you can while maintaining balance.
  • Benefit: Strengthens legs while enhancing balance—a crucial factor as we age.

2. AirFit Rows on the BOSU

  • How to: With the bubble side down, ensure the BOSU is stable. Perform rows using the AirFit.
  • Benefit: Works the back and arms while challenging core stability.

3. AirFit Handstands

  • How to: With your feet secured in the AirFit, walk your hands out until you’re in a handstand position. For an added challenge, incorporate the BOSU.
  • Benefit: Strengthens shoulders and core, improving upper body control.

4. Spidermans with BOSU and AirFit

  • How to: Place your feet in the AirFit and hands on the BOSU. Bring one knee toward the elbow, alternating sides.
  • Benefit: Targets the core and obliques, helping to maintain a strong and stable torso.

5. BOSU Side Planks with Knee to Chest

  • How to: Perform a side plank with your feet in the AirFit, bringing your knee to your chest.
  • Benefit: Strengthens the obliques and hips, key areas for maintaining mobility and preventing injury.

This workout can be tailored to your fitness level. Start with 12 repetitions per exercise, and as you become stronger, increase to 20 or even 30 reps. Alternatively, you can set a timer and work through the exercises with a focus on maintaining form.
