Bronny James and LeBron James made history on Tuesday night when they played alongside one another in the Los Angeles Lakers’ season opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

It was a special moment.

That said, while Bronny and LeBron playing together was historical – it also went largely as expected.

Bronny didn’t look like he belonged on the court with his dad.

So why are the Lakers so intent on making this a thing?

ESPN NBA insider Brian Windhorst offered an explanation this week.

“What the Lakers are doing here is trying to get the most out of LeBron,” Windhorst said.

“This is an investment, not just in history, it’s an investment in engaging and energizing your franchise player at age 39. And I think it’s working. LeBron is completely engaged and energized, and I think JJ Redick is making a smart move by totally leaning into this and totally embracing this.”

An engaged LeBron is obviously great for the Lakers, but it remains to be seen if Bronny will be enough to keep him enthused all season long.

More likely than not – L.A.’s wins and losses will have a greater impact on LeBron’s psyche.
