Brendan Rodgers told ‘really hungry’ Celtic star must play vs Dundee today
The Celtic fans wake up this morning knowing that today could be a really pivotal day of the season as the first of the post-Scottish Premiership split fixtures take place.
Brendan Rodgers takes his side to Dens Park to face a Dundee side who have just recently shown against Rangers that they will be no pushovers.
Rangers also Travel to St Mirren to face a Stephen Robinson side who is looking to qualify for Europe this season.
So with plenty to play for and a lot at stake, the Celtic manager must look to get his team selection right today to ensure that taking three points from Dundee is as simple and as straight forward as possible.
Hyunjun Yang could drop to the Celtic bench
Stephen McGinn has told Rodgers that, after his display against Aberdeen at Hampden, James Forrest must play against Dundee today.
The legendary winger came on as a second-half substitute at the national stadium against Aberdeen, grabbed a goal and changed the course of the game.
And that was enough to convince McGinn that he should play ahead of Hyunjun Yang this afternoon.
McGinn said, “He’s got to play on Sunday. He’s got to. He grabbed the Game by the scruff of the neck.
“I mean James Forrest is someone we came across in Scotland squads when he was young, very quiet but you don’t spend as long at a top club like that without being able to dig in.
“And James Forrest has had to dig in this season. He’s had to look on and maybe not make squads at times.
“He’s not been on the bench every game this season. He’s not been picked as Brendan Rodgers just alluded to.
“I wonder if he’s looking at Yang‘s performance at the weekend and just saying, ‘Get me on that pitch. I can do everything better than him’.
“But he looked really hungry and he looked like someone who said, ‘No, I’m here and I want that jersey.’
There is no doubt about it, Forrest is a big-game player. He has produced on the big occasion so many times under different managers throughout his illustrious Celtic career.
And there won’t be bigger five games this season than the ones coming over the next four weeks. With just three points separating Celtic and Rangers a slipup between now and the Glasgow Derby could prove fatal.
And what Forrest has shown is that when Celtic needs a bit of quality he has the ability to provide that and become a match-winner and that is what Rodgers needs this afternoon.
