When people think of the American West, they usually think of the Mustang horse. Their freedom has become a representation of human liberty and that is why they are considered legendary in American history. Wild horses that roam freely are living symbols of the memorable and historic spirit of the West. They add value to the diversity of life patterns in the United States and enhance the lives of Americans. They have won the hearts of millions of horse lovers around the world and among all the wild horses, there is one exceptional horse that symbolizes their true spirit.

His name is Picasso, and he’s one of the most famous wild horses still around in America. Picasso is a horse from Sand Wash Basin in northwestern Colorado. He’s recognized for his remarkable pinto color, and he really does look like he was painted. He’s believed to be around 30 years old, and his body gives it away. Picasso is certainly an old horse, which could be as much to cash in on his reputation as anything else. He’s roamed the wild for nearly three decades, and it shows: His coat is stitched together with the blemishes and bumps of other stallions; his face is thinning.

And yet Picasso remained, wild and free. Picasso has faced many battles and survived harsh weather conditions. He is a true symbol of courage, determination and bravery. Picasso has fought harsh winters and survived extremely hot summers in the vast Colorado desert. Most people would assume that he would not make it, but he defied all odds with his bravery and strength. Picasso was just like any other wild horse, but as time went by his reputation grew a lot.

Tourists and wild mustang enthusiasts began to enjoy him from afar and started taking beautiful photographs of him. There are more than 700 wild horses similar to Picasso in the 157,000 hectares of national territory of the Basin, but only this one manages to provoke such an extraordinary presence both among his equine relatives and among humans. Picasso is a Celebrity like no other! Photographers follow his every move in Facebook groups and other social networks.

Tourists even travel from all over the world just to see Picasso in his true home. His excellence has been painted in art, captured on camera, recorded in songs, and written about in poetry. His fans have even discovered his family tree and make weekly tours from Craig Town and 2,000-mile trips from Canada. There’s no denying it – there’s no other horse like him! Even though he’s now a mature Picasso horse, he still holds his mythical status. Picasso is also remembered for his love affairs.

It may seem strange, but over the years he has had relationships with several mares, but his beloved mare was Mingo, with whom he was with for a few years. Although he is a little smaller than the other stallions, Picasso’s fighting soul made him win many battles and defeat all who challenged him. He is the epitome of strength, freedom and portrays wild horses better than any other horse.

But today, Picasso is no longer the undisputed leader of the flock that he once was. Picasso fans know that the end is near. In the winter of 2018, according to most descriptions, Picasso was frail and weak, just skin and bones. People would even believe that they would never see him again and that is what happened. Months passed and no one had seen him around. In early spring, fortunately, Picasso was found.

Whatever happens, we know for certain that Picasso has lived a long life, and whenever he is gone, he will be at peace. Over the years, there have been requests for Picasso to be adopted, to be protected from the difficult life in the wild. But I think we all understand that Picasso belongs in the wild. We should not try to change wild horses, but on the contrary, we should help them by letting them be wild.

We are so glad that this legendary horse is still alive and we hope he keeps running free as long as he can. Even though this horse is very famous in the equestrian world there are still people who didn’t know anything about him. We believe that this horse deserves more recognition, that is why we invite you to watch the video below and share it with your friends so that they can also learn more about this amazing horse.
