a clean sweep

The Royals jumped on top in the first inning with nine runs and just never took their foot off the accelerator. In the end, the Astros claw three back but the Royals tack on four more, winning 13-3 and completing the sweep.

Royals win!

Jeremy Peña up now and he pops a foul ball by first. Melendez comes over and puts it away to end the game.

Double

Jon Singleton the hitter and he rips one over the head of Dairon Blanco in right for a double.

Grae Kessinger to hit now and he nubs a little tapper in front of the plate. Freddy Fermin throws to first for out number two.

Top 9th

Alex Bregman will lead off as MJ Melendez takes over at first and Dairon Blanco takes over in right field. Bregman rolls one to short for Garrett Hampson who throws to first for the out.

Pitching Change

Jordan Lyles will come onto the mound for the Royals.

Nelson Velázquez up now and he flies out to right fielder Kyle Tucker. Incredibly the position player has a 1-2-3 inning on the mound!

MJ Melendez the hitter and he rolls a grounder to first. Jon Singleton flips it to pitcher Grae Kessinger who is on the bag for out number two.

Dairon Blanco lifts a fly ball out to center for Mauricio Dubón. One away.

Bottom 8th

Jake Meyers will take over in left field as Dairon Blanco will pinch hit for Salvador Perez and lead off.

Pitching Change

The Astros will turn to utility player Grae Kessinger to take over on the mound.

Kyle Ticker the hitter now and he works the count 2-2 before fouling off four in a row. The eighth delivery is in the dirt and the count is full.

The payoff delivery is fouled back as is the repeat of it. The eleventh delivery of the at-bat is lifted up to short for Hampson to end the inning.

Pinch-hitter

Jake Meyers will now hit for Yordan Alvarez and he works the count to 2-2 before whiffing at a fastball for strike three.

Jose Altuve jumps on the first pitch and rips a ground ball to left for a single.

Top 8th

Garrett Hampson will take over at short from Bobby Witt Jr. as Mauricio Dubón leads off for the Astros. He pops a high one to third and Maikel Garcia gathers it in foul territory. One away

Vinnie Pasquantino lines one out to left field for Yordan Alvarez to end the inning, but not before the Royals tack on three more and lead now 13-3.

Bobby Witt Jr. HOME RUN!

Bobby Witt Jr to hit and he cranks a huge fly ball to right center! That is gone! A three run homer for Witt and they are just pouring it on!

Maikel Garcia stands in with men on the corners and one out and he can't hold up on a breaking ball outside for strike three.

Kyle Isbel up now and he ropes one into right field for a single. Loftin hustles around second and takes third on the play.

Freddy Fermin the hitter now and he pops a high fly ball to second. All of the infielders converge on the ball and Altuve comes down with it.

Bottom 7th

Nick Loftin leads off for KC and he works the count full before Abreu's payoff delivery misses wide for a walk.

Pitching Change

Bryan Abreu will now take over for Houston on the mound

Victor Caratini up now and he lifts a shallow fly ball to center for Kyle Isbel to end the inning. The Astros have now stranded 11 base runners.

Jeremy Peña the hitter now and he works the count to 2-2 before popping one behind the plate for catcher Freddy Fermin. Two gone.

Jon Singleton to the plate and he goes down swinging at three breaking balls. One out

Yainer Diaz the hitter now and he pokes a single into center as Bregman advances to second.

Top 7th

Alex Bregman leads off against the new pitcher and he rips a shot into the hole at third. Garcia makes the diving stop and gets up, makes the throw but not in time. Bregman beats it out for a leadoff infield hit.

Pitching Change

The Royals will call on Matt Sauer to take over the pitching duties.

Nelson Velázquez the hitter and he works the count to 2-2 before going down swinging for strike three. But the Royals tack on one more and lead now by a score of 10-3.

6-3 Double play

MJ Melendez up now with runners on first and second and he taps a roller to short. Jeremy Peña steps on the the bag at second and throws to first for the 6-3 double play. Pasquantino advances to third.

Hit by pitch

Salvador Perez up to the plate now with a runner on second and no outs. He fouls off four in a row before a couple of balls in the dirt make it 2-2.

Another foul before Montero lets one get away from him and Perez is hit by the pitch.

Royals score!

Pasquantino ropes a shot to the wall in right field for a double. Bobby Witt Jr. scores from third.

Stolen base

Vinnie Pasquantino the hitter and on the first pitch, Bobby Witt Jr. takes off for second. The throw from Caratini was waaaaayyyy off line and gets into center field. Witt takes third base on the error.

Bottom 6th

Bobby Witt Jr. leads off and rips a single to right. He holds up, briefly considering testing the arm of Kyle Tucker.

Pitching Change

Rafael Montero will come on to take over from Tayler Scott on the mound.

Kyle Tucker the hitter facing the new pitcher. He jumps on a fastball and hits it well to left field, but in that strong wind the ball just dies. Nelson Velázquez gets to it to end the inning. Tucker gave it a ride but the Astros strand three and in the middle of six it is now 9-3 Royals.

Pitching Change

Manager Matt Quatraro will go ahead and make the switch, calling on Angel Zerpa to get out of this jam.

Astros score!

Yordan Álvarez up now with bases loaded and two outs. Anderson is taking no chances, with Álvarez more able than anyone to change everything with one swing. Anderson stays away from the zone and walks him on four pitches. Caratini scores.

José Altuve up now with runners on the corners and two outs. He works the count full before Anderson's payoff misses high for ball four. The bases are now loaded.

Astros score!

Mauricio Dubón the hitter with two out and runners on second and third. He lines one into right field for a single! Peña scores from third and Caratini is held at third.

Double

Victor Caratini to the plate and he goes the other way to the gap in left center for a double. Jeremy Peña holds up at third.

Fielder's choice

Jeremy Peña up now and he works a 2-2 count before grounding one to third. Garcia goes to second to get the lead runner and the throw to first is not in time.

Jon Singleton the hitter and he draws a four pitch walk.

Yainer Diaz leads off against the new pitcher and he grounds one to second. Nick Loftin throws to first for the out.

Pitching Change

Royals manager Matt Quatraro will dip into his bullpen tap Nick Anderson to take over from Brady Singer who has had a fabulous outing.

Maikel Garcia to the plate and he rolls one to short. Peña makes a long throw and again, it is off line, but this time Singleton gan grab it and stretch out for the bag to end the inning.

Kyle Isbel the hitter and he rips a grounder to short. Peña spins and spikes the ball on the throw. That is ruled an infield hit, but really should be a throwing error. That was terrible.

Freddy Fermin up now and he runs the count full before Scott's payoff is lifted to center field for Mauricio Dubón. Two down.

Bottom 5th

Nick Loftin leads off and he grounds one to short for Peña. The throw to first gets out number one.

Alex Bregman the hitter now and he lifts a high fly ball behind first. Nick Loftin drifts over and makes the catch to end the inning. So the Royals are not made to pay for the error.

Kyle Tucker comes up now with runners on first and second and one out. He goes chasing three sliders and comes up empty. Two down.

Yordan Álvarez the hitter and he lifts a blooper into left field. Velázquez calls for it and gets to it, but then takes his eye off the ball and drops it! Álvarez reaches first on a fielding error.

José Altuve up now and he rips a drifter into center for a single.

Mauricio Dubón leads things off for Houston and he fouls off three before taking a big whiff of a low slider for strike three.

Nelson Velázquez to the plate and he pooches a grounder to short. Peña goes to first to end the inning.

MJ Melendez the hitter now and he taps a dribbler in front of the plate. Catcher Victor Caratini jumps up and grabs it, throwing to first for the second out.

Bottom 4th

Salvador Perez leads off and Scott gets him swinging at a nice slider for strike three.

Pitching Change

In a decidedly bullpen game situation, the Astros call on Tayler Scott to take over the pitching duties.

Victor Caratini grounds one to shortstop. Bobby Witt Jr. goes to first to end the inning, but the Astros get on the board thanks to a Yainer Diaz home run, trailling by a score of 9-1

Jeremy Peña the hitter and he hits a solid shot to left field, but it just dies in the wind and Velázquez gets to it and pulls it in for the second out.

Jon Singleton up now and he ropes a long shot to center field. Kyle Isbel manages to track it down and put it away. One out.

Top 4th

Yainer Diaz leads off and he works the count full before Singer's payoff delivery is fouled back. We do it again, and again it is fouled back.

The eighth pitch of the at-bat is rocked into left field! It is gone! A long way! Home run Yainer Diaz!

Vinnie Pasquantino the hitter and he chops one to short. Peña fields it and goes to first to end the inning.

Kyle Tucker the hitter now and he lines a stiff one out to center, but Kyle Isbel is able to get a bead on it. Two down.

Yordan Álvarez leads off and he lifts a fly ball to right but MJ Melendez is there to put it away.

Kyle Isbel lifts a fly ball to center field. Mauricio Dubón drifts over and gets under it to end the inning. After two, the Royals are still up 9-0!

Nick Loftin leads off and lifts one to right field but Kyle Tucker is right there. One away.

The hit

Most of the Royals' work was on singles, but this was the bomb

Nelson Velázquez will face the new pitcher with bases loaded and two outs. The count runs full and the payoff from Martinez is a sweeper that gets Velázquez swinging for strike three. Whew!

What an inning! It was hard to type fast enough to keep up! The Royals sent 15 batters to the plate in the first inning, stranding three and scoring nine!

Pitching change

Manager Joe Espada has no choice but to make a change here. This is just batting practice for the Royals. He calls on Seth Martinez to take over on the mound. This is not a good moment for this injury depleted Astros bullpen. They might not have enough arms to last a full nine innings at this rate!

MJ Melendez to the plate and this has been unrelenting! The Royals have jumped all over the Astros here! And Brown hasn't been throwing lots of pitches, with the aggression of the Royals. Melendez works the count full before Brown misses low for ball four, and the bases are loaded.

Salvador Perez the hitter and he too jumps on the first pitch, singling on a ground ball to center field. Vinnie Pasquantino advances to second.

Bobby Witt Jr. up now and he lifts a long fly ball into right field. It looks playable, but just drifts out and out and GONE! A two run homer!

Maikel Garcia up now and the Royals have gone all the way around the order in the first inning here. He ropes a single into center and the Royals are pouring it on! Two more runs score!

Kyle Isbel up now and he chops one to first base. Jon Singleton flips to pitcher Hunter Brown covering the bag. Both runners advance 90 feet on the play.

Freddy Fermin the hitter now with one on and one out. He works the count full before pushing a ground ball past a diving Bregman at third, squirting into left for a single. Loftin advances to second.

Royals score!

Nick Loftin jumps on the first pitch, singling on a ground ball to center field. MJ Melendez scores! Nelson Velázquez scores! The Royals are up 5-0!

Nelson Velázquez the hitter and he goes iniside out with a low curve ball poking it into right for a single. Pasquantino scores from third and Melendez moves to third. Velázquez advances to second on the throw. Men on second and third and one out and the Royals are up 3-0!

MJ Melendez up now and he rips one over the head of Abreu, down the line in right and into the corner! He gets to second as Pasquantino goes to third.

Salvador Perez the hitter now and he skies one straight up to first base, no trouble for Abreu.

The clash between the Houston Astros and the Kansas City Royals promises to be a riveting encounter

PITCHING

On the mound, Houston will turn to Hunter Brown, who has struggled mightily. He only lasted four innings in his 2024 debut against the Yankees, and surrendered five runs on eight hits and four walks in just three innings against the Rangers. Coming off of a terrible end of season last year, and Brown is in a terrible funk.

The Royals are going with Brady Singer, who has been the true ace of this pitching staff. He has given up just one run in 13.1 innings of work, and that was a solo home run. His career stats suggest that this might simply be a hot streak that he is on, but no matter what it is, he is riding it seriously high.

Welcome to the Diario AS USA live commentary of Game 3 as the Houston Astros try to avoid being swept by the Kansas City Royals in Kauffman Stadium.

Houston is off to a terrible start this season, dropping eight of their first 12 games. More pressing on their minds, however, are the last two that they dropped to Kansas City. A loss tonight would see them swept on the road by a team who was widely expected in spring training not to be serious contenders this season.

The reality of the situation, however, is that the Royals are hot, hot, hot. Sitting in second place in the AL Central, they have a six-game win streak on the roll. If you judged by confidence alone, then it is Kansas City who are strutting in to tonight’s game with everything clicking.

The problem for the Astros is two-pronged. They are giving up runs this season at the same rate as they score them, averaging 4.17 runs per game on both sides of the ball. Their bats are capable of so much more, as is their bullpen. One or the other needs to pick up the pace.
