Are any players suspended for the Euro 2024 semifinals?
The 24 participants at Euro 2024 have been whittled down to just four, with one of Spain, France, the Netherland and England to be crowned the latest European champions at Olympiastadion in Berlin on July 14.
Spain face France in the first of the two semifinals at Allianz Arena in Munich on Tuesday (9 July), 24 hours before the Netherlands take on England at Westfalenstadion in Dortmund.
And it is the Spaniards, arguably the most impressive team at the tournament in Germany so far, who have the biggest selection issues to contend with ahead of their last four meeting with the French.
Which players will miss the Euro 2024 semifinals due to suspension?
Head coach Luis de la Fuente will be forced into making at least two changes to his defence, which kept three three clean sheets in the group stage and has conceded just two goals overall.
Right-back Dani Carvajal and central defender Robin Le Normand have started four of their team’s five matches but won’t be able to take part in the semifinal due to suspension.
The Real Madrid man received his second booking of the tournament in extra time against Germany in the semifinals, incurring a one-match ban as a result. His red card for a second yellow right at the end of the same game has no bearing on his disciplinary record and will not cause his suspension to be extended.
Le Normand finds himself in exactly the same boat, with his 29th-minute booking against the Germans following a yellow card in the second group game against Italy.
Is Álvaro Morata suspended for Spain’s Euro 2024 semifinal against France?
There has been some confusion surrounding the availability of captain Álvaro Morata, with many media outlets, UEFA and the player himself initially believing he was also shown a second yellow card after being substituted against Germany. However, UEFA later clarified that it was teammate Fabián Ruiz who was booked by referee Anthony Taylor for complaining about a decision from the bench, having also been replaced.
Morata will therefore be available to face France in Munich.
The other three semifinalists, France, the Netherlands and England, have no suspensions to contend with and could go into the games with full rosters to choose from.
What are UEFA’s suspension rules in Euro 2024?
According to UEFA’s suspension rules for the tournament, players who are shown two yellow cards up to and including the quarter-finals much serve an immediate one-match suspension.
Accumulated yellow cards are wiped from players’ records following the conclusion of the quarter-finals, with the aim of reducing the likelihood of suspensions in the final. The only way a player can be banned for the Euro 2024 final is if they receive a red card (directly, or two yellows) in the semi-finals.
That means Carvajal and Le Normand will be able to play in the final in Berlin on July 14 if Spain get there.
Will Pedri play for Spain against France in the Euro 2024 semifinal?
Barcelona midfielder Pedri was forced off in the opening minutes of the quarterfinal against Germany and isn’t expected to play in the tournament again. It is thought he will be out for at least a month due to a knee sprain.
