Ajax fans pay tribute to Mexico midfielder Edson Álvarez
Edson Álvarez made his mark during his spell at Ajax, and today the famous Dutch club recognized their former player. Ahead of their match against NEC, the club from the Dutch capital paid tribute to the Mexican midfielder, as he took to the pitch at the Johan Cruyff Arena to the applause of the crowd, under the banner of “Forever Your Home” in appreciation of his four years with the club.
Álvarez greeted his former team-mates and current players, and on the pitch, the crowd chanted his name, a sign of the affection he earned during his time in Amsterdam.
Álvarez arrived at Ajax after the club suffered a tough Champions League semi-final exit against Tottenham in May 2019. Considered the best team in the comPetition that season - for their eye-catching style of play - players including Frenkie de Jong, Hakim Ziyech and Matthijs de Ligt would later leave to join other clubs, before the Mexico international became a regular in their side.
