90min's alternative Premier League awards - 2022/23

The 2022/23 Premier League season is over and it arguably gave us more moments of chaos, manager meltdowns and on-field embarrassments than we've ever seen before.

There were thrills, spills, shock results, great goals and wonderful individual performances throughout the campaign in England's top flight, but nobody has managed to get out of the season clean.

To honour the weird and wonderful of the 2022/23 Premier League season, 90min thought it was a good idea to create some alternative awards.

Highest scoring Wout award

Ah, Wout Faes.

The towering centre back managed to score three more goals than namesake and Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst this season. That sounds impressive until you realise two of the goals were scored for Liverpool and he plays for Leicester City.

Best Sam Allardyce quote

"Far too many people think I am old and antiquated, which is so far from the truth. I might be 68 and look old but there's nobody ahead of me in Football terms. Not Pep, not Klopp, not Arteta. It's all there with me.

Shortly after these comments, Sam Allardyce would oversee the relegation of Leeds United to the Championship.

Oddest celebration

Doing the Didier Drogba celebration in front of your home fans after losing 4-0 to Manchester City was certainly a choice, Jesse Marsch.

Worst manager

A 9.1 win percentage and losing eight of 11 games in charge of Chelsea was certainly a choice, Frank Lampard.

The 'life comes at you pretty fast' moment of the season

Scoring a 93rd minute goal at Anfield to complete a three goal comeback must be a wonderful feeling.

Watching your team concede a 94th minute goal before you'd barely got your top back on after celebrating your leveller must be the complete opposite.

Richarlison felt both of these emotions on 30 April 2023 inside the space of 30 seconds.

Meme of the season

Jason Tindall went from just another assistant coach to the most talked about man in world football because of one pesky Twitter account.

That is the definition of 'meme of the season' if we've ever seen one.

You simply have to sit back and admire that man's 'main character' energy.

Handshake of the season

Was Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte's handshake friendly?

No.

Was it funny?

Yes.

Did this actually happen this season and not 20 years ago?

Amazingly, yes it did.

Best flag

The only thing that could possibly make the above photo more Mancunian is if the man on the left was wearing a Pretty Green parka.

Crisis club of the season

Tottenham Hotspur ran Chelsea close for this award having sacked an interim manager this season, but ultimately we couldn't look past the mess at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues accumulated 30 points fewer than they did during the 2021/22 campaign having spent around £500m on new players. Make that make sense.

Accidental Partridge of the season

Every current and ex-footballer seems to have a little bit of Alan Partridge in them.

Except for Gary Neville, that is.

Gary Neville has a very, very healthy helping of Partridge energy about him, as best exemplified by calling a holiday a 'mini-retirement' when it is in fact just called a 'holiday'.

Just call it a holiday mate, it's fine.
