England’s David Skinns leads the Canadian Open after day one, having shot an eight-under round of 62 in Thursday’s first round in Hamilton, Ontario. Skinns is one stroke ahead of US pair Sean O’Hair and Sam Burns, with Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre a shot further back in fourth.

Two-time tournament winner Rory McIlory, who at world No 2 is the highest-ranked player in the field, finished round one in a tie for sixth, after shooting a four-under 66. World No 1 Scottie Scheffler, who on Wednesday saw all charges against him dropped after his arrest at the PGA Championship earlier this month, has opted out of this week’s event at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club

Meanwhile, Nick Taylor’s defence of his Canadian Open title began badly on Thursday, as the 36-year-old finished at two over and in a tie for 95th place. Last year, Taylor became the first Canadian to win the tournament since Pat Fletcher in 1954.
