Will Takehiro Tomiyasu be suspended for red card vs Crystal Palace?

In the blink of an eye, the dynamic of Monday night's clash at Crystal Palace shifted.

After taking a 1-0 lead early in the second half thanks to a cool Martin Odegaard penalty, Mikel Arteta's Arsenal took complete control of the contest at Selhurst Park. A compact Palace looked more stretched, with Roy Hodgson's men fatiguing while the Gunners circulated possession with unerring conviction.

All it took, though, was a somewhat hopeful Joachim Andersen pass into the channel for the hosts to get back into the contest. Caught out by Andersen's distribution, Takehiro Tomiyasu was handed his second yellow card for what referee David Coote deemed to be a foul on the spinning Jordan Ayew, who might've otherwise been away.

Booked just minutes before for dawdling at a throw-in, Tomiyasu's second card was undoubtedly harsh, but Arteta's men were able to see out the remainder of the contest with only one or two scares to ensure they claimed six points from six to start the 2023/24 Premier League season.

As harsh as his second yellow card was, Tomiyasu will be suspended for Arsenal's next Premier League clash. As he wasn't shown a straight red, he'll only be out for one Game.

Thus, the Japanese international will miss Saturday's clash against Fulham at the Emirates.

Can Arsenal appeal Takehiro Tomiyasu's red card?

While clubs have the right to appeal a straight red card, as Liverpool have with Alexis Mac Allister's dismissal against Bournemouth, they cannot appeal a second yellow card.

Similarly, VAR couldn't have intervened on Monday night despite it appearing that referee Coote had made an error regarding his decision to dismiss the Arsenal defender. Tomiyasu barely made any contact with Ayew and a second yellow was rather severe.

VAR can only step in for and potentially overturn a straight red card.
