Why Peyton Hendershot could get cut from Cowboys roster
With training camp just around the corner, one Dallas Cowboys tight end has had the misfortune of being named most likely player to be released before the start of the season. Peyton Hendershot faces stiff comPetition with fellow tight ends Jake Ferguson, Luke Schoonmaker, and John Stephens Jr., and even rookie Brevyn Spann-Ford.
Why is Hendershot the likely TE to get cut?
Hendershot had to miss the Cowboys’ mandatory minicamp in May due to a minor medical issue and is therefore already behind heading into training camp this week. He saw a drop in production from his first to second season in Dallas, going from 11 receptions and 16 targets for 103 yards and two touchdowns in 2022 to four receptions on seven targets for 38 yards and no touchdowns in 2023.
ProFootballNetwork.com wrote that Hendershot would be a likely candidate for the Cowboys to release going into the 2024 season. “Peyton Hendershot was active for all 17 Games in 2022 after joining the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent,” they wrote. “But his playing time plummeted in 2023 and the Cowboys now have better depth at tight end. He’s a clear release candidate.”
Hendershot will have to prove himself worthy of staying on the final 53-man roster when he heads to training camp, with the first open practice to be held this Thursday, July 25.
