How do tennis rankings work in women’s tennis?

Logically, as a player progresses further in officially sanctioned events, the greater the number of points that are awarded by the association. As you can probably guess, among all the tournaments that are played in a single season, Grand Slams provide players with the largest amount of points at 2000, while runner-ups receive 1200. In terms of shelf life, points collected from each tournament are valid for one year. Where the ranking system itself is concerned, the list is updated on a weekly basis.
