Transfer of Michael Olise to Chelsea Could Be Bad News for Noni Madueke
Noni Madueke’s goals for the 2023/24 season were unmistakably clear.
“Next season is about becoming one of the top players in my position, contributing to wins with goals and assists, and helping my teammates,” the winger declared nearly a year ago. “That’s my aim.”
So, did he achieve that? Not quite. But overall, it was a season of growth for Madueke.
Almost a year after setting this ambitious target, Madueke reflected: “It’s been a season of ups and downs, both individually and collectively. I’ve had many learning moments and discovered a lot about myself.
“I’ve had to show resilience, starting the season injured, which was tough. Coming back, I had another niggle post-international break, causing me to miss a few more Games.
“There’s a reason for everything, and it’s likely made me stronger mentally and in character. I’ve learned to persist because you never know how the journey unfolds, but you can control your daily work ethic and application.”
Indeed, it was a challenging start to the season for the 22-year-old due to injuries. However, in the new year, Madueke maintained his fitness and became an integral part of Chelsea’s squad under the now-departed Mauricio Pochettino.
After being benched for three consecutive Premier League matches against Manchester City, Brentford, and Newcastle United, Madueke played in every match from that point until the season’s end. He even started in Chelsea’s final nine Games.
The former PSV Eindhoven winger concluded the season with eight goals and three assists across all comPetitions—a respectable return in 34 Games, though there’s always a sense that Madueke has more to offer.
Madueke hasn’t yet achieved the consistency needed to establish himself as a key player in the squad, which is part of why the club is searching for a new right winger this summer.
Michael Olise’s name has been circulating among Chelsea fans on social media, with many eager for the club to sign the Crystal Palace winger.
Olise had an impressive season at Selhurst Park despite injury setbacks. During his time with the Eagles, the 22-year-old has demonstrated his potential to be a Game-changer in the final third, a quality Chelsea lacks in their wide areas.
Enzo Maresca, starting as Chelsea’s head coach next month, favors wide players who are heavily involved in all attacking phases. Adding a player of Olise’s calibre could make a significant difference in Maresca’s debut season.
However, this would likely result in less playing time for Madueke. Olise, too, has faced injury issues early in his career, so there should still be opportunities for Madueke.
With increased competition for his position, Madueke will need to elevate his performance. It feels like Madueke has untapped potential ready to burst forth, but Chelsea has yet to find the trigger.
