The Prize Money for Hong Kong Athletes at Paris Olympics 2024
After months of anticipation, the Paris Olympics 2024 are finally in full swing and as expected, the grandest Sports event of 2024 is drawing interest from all corners of the globe.
While we’ve had a rugged track record at the marquee Sports meet, it looks like our glory days are here. In less than a week since the start of the Paris Olympics 2024, we have clinched four medals, including two gold ones. Naturally, the excitement around the event in Hong Kong is far greater than one could have previously anticipated.
Before we start talking about the Paris Olympics 2024 in detail, however, here are a few important things you need to keep in mind:
- Date: 26 July to 11 August
- Venue: Paris, France
Hong Kong has fielded a relatively small contingent this year — 36 athletes in 12 Sports. However, the players representing the Southeast Asian region are highly skilled, as proven by their performances so far. Even if no other athlete wins a medal this year, the two gold medals have ensured that 2024 will be Hong Kong’s best outing in the History of the Olympics.
It is not just the medals that the athletes get to take home though. While the organisers offer no cash rewards, every country’s governing body ensures that the medal winners are handsomely rewarded.
On that note, here is a look at the Paris Olympics 2024 prize money that Hong Kong’s medal-winning athletes will receive and how it stands in comparison to what the rest of the countries are offering.
How much prize money will a Paris Olympics 2024 medal winner from Hong Kong get?
According to a number of reports, the prize money structure for the athletes from Hong Kong at the Paris Olympics 2024 by the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC) is as follows:
- Gold: HKD 6 million (USD 768,172)
- Silver: HKD 3 million (USD 384,086)
- Bronze: HKD 1.5 million (USD 192,043)
In practice, this means that both Vivian Kong and Cheun Ka Long will be rewarded with HKD 6 million each, while Siobhán Haughey will receive HKD 3 million (HKD 1.5 million for each of her bronze medals) once they return to Hong Kong.
A comparison of Hong Kong’s payouts with that of other countries
If you think that a country like the United States of America (USA) offers the highest payouts to its medal-winning Olympic athletes, you are in for a real shock.
The prize money of USD 768,172 offered by Hong Kong to its medal-winning athletes at the Paris Olympics 2024 is, in fact, the highest in the world. As it happens, even the Hong Kong athletes finishing in fourth place in their respective sporting disciplines will receive over USD 100,000.
