The 2024 list of the most peaceful countries in the world by the Global Peace Index (GPI) is out, and Southeast Asia has once again made its mark on the global stage with two positions. The Southeast Asian countries to make it to the top 10 list include Singapore and Malaysia.

While Iceland maintained its top spot for the 17th consecutive year, Singapore and Malaysia demonstrated their commitment to peace and stability by ranking fifth and tenth respectively. Ireland and Austria secured the second and third positions on the list of the world’s most peaceful countries by the Global Peace Index.

The 2024 Global Peace Index underscores the importance of fostering peaceful societies and the positive impact it can have on a nation’s overall well-being. Europe continues to lead the way in peacefulness, with seven of the top 10 countries being located in the region.

The peacefulness of a nation is measured by an index comprising 23 indicators, each rated on a scale of one to five, with the most peaceful country scoring the least. Created by the Institute for Economics & Peace, the Global Peace Index analyses 163 independent states and territories based on their peacefulness quotient, according to Forbes India. Peacefulness is measured across three domains: societal safety and security, ongoing coNFLicts, and militarisation.

  7. Portugal
