Supreme Court Rejects CBI Plea Against Rhea Chakraborty in Sushant Singh Rajput Case
October 25, 2024: In a significant ruling for actress Rhea Chakraborty, the Supreme Court has dismissed a Petition by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Maharashtra government challenging the Bombay High Court's earlier decision to quash look-out circulars (LOCs) issued against Chakraborty, her brother Showik, and their father, Lt. Col. Indrajit Chakraborty (Retd). This decision stems from the high-profile investigation into the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
A bench consisting of Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan criticized the CBI's Petition as “frivolous,” asserting that it appeared to be motivated by the defendants’ Celebrity status rather than substantial evidence. Justice Gavai remarked, “We are warning. You are filing such a frivolous Petition, only because one of the accused is a high-profile person... It will be with exemplary cost. Both persons have deep roots in society,” during the hearing.
This ruling follows the Bombay High Court's February decision to cancel the LOCs, which had originally been issued in 2020 amid the ongoing investigation into Rajput’s death. The court's stance signals a growing frustration with the perceived misuse of legal mechanisms in high-profile cases.
The CBI's request for a pass-over of the matter was met with skepticism from the bench, further emphasizing the court's disapproval of the agency's approach. “If you want cost and some compliments to CBI, we will pass-over,” Justice Gavai quipped.
This latest development adds another chapter to the ongoing saga surrounding Rajput's untimely death, which has been the subject of intense media scrutiny and public interest since it occurred in June 2020.
