Benfica has reportedly informed the 22-year-old that he does not fit into the first-team plans for the upcoming season.

Reports from O Jogo suggest that Celtic’s management is still considering whether to activate the option to buy Bernardo for a fee similar to that paid for Jota. The option, if triggered, would require Celtic to pay around £6 million (€7.5 m) to secure Bernardo’s services permanently.

Bernardo’s potential is there for all to see. He’s made a decent impact and looks an overall tidy player.

During the Champions League campaign, Brendan Rodgers trusted the young player, hinting that the manager does rate the midfielder.

Bernardo is still young and has a lot of potential to fulfil, but he has been at Celtic for a year and wouldn’t need a settling-in period. It could be a shrewd piece of Business from Celtic to get this one done.
