Motherwell midfielder Andy Halliday has voiced his opinion that Celtic should seize the opportunity to sign Aberdeen midfielder Connor Barron on a free transfer this summer.

During a discussion on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, Halliday highlighted Barron’s performance in Aberdeen’s narrow loss to Celtic in the Scottish Cup semi-final, calling him the “best player on the pitch.”

The 21-year-old midfielder’s contract with Aberdeen is set to expire this summer, sparking interest from a number of clubs both in the UK and Serie A. While Celtic have previously been linked to Barron, when Ange Postecoglou was manager in the summer of 2022 [P&J Sport], Halliday specifically pointed out that acquiring homegrown talent like Barron would be strategic for Celtic, especially for building their squad for European comPetitions.

“Personally I thought Connor Barron was the best player on the pitch on Saturday, to be honest,” Andy Halliday said.

“He’s out of contract in the summer. I’m not trying to prise him away from Aberdeen but I always feel they are the no-brainers that Celtic and Rangers should be looking for, especially when they’re trying to get homegrown talent for their European squads.

“I thought he was excellent.

“I’ve heard a few links down south as well but I just think they’re no-brainers for Rangers and Celtic. It doesn’t seem like there’s been much chat there.”

With the transfer window approaching and Barron’s contract winding down, Celtic might find a valuable asset in the young midfielder as they look to bolster their squad for the upcoming season.
