2024/25 NHL Stanley Cup contenders

It isn’t surprising to see Edmonton and Florida at the top of the odds board for this season’s Stanley Cup. The reigning conference champions and Stanley Cup winner re-tooled in the offseason and are poised to return to the playoffs where anything can happen.

Colorado currently holds the 3rd-best odds in the Western Conference to win the Stanley Cup. Any team with Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar and Mikko Rantanen always has a chance. But the rest of the roster does not resemble much of the juggernaut Colorado has been recently. Vancouver, Nashville and Vegas, to name a few, all look deeper than Colorado at this stage.

The Devils finished 13th out of 16 teams in the Eastern Conference last season. This is a big jump to the 4th-most likely team out of the East to win the Stanley Cup. A lot went wrong last year that could be considered an outlier. If all goes right this year in terms of players staying Healthy and new head coach Sheldon Keefe pulling the right strings, the jump in odds is justified.

NHL Stanley Cup winner best bet: Edmonton Oilers (+800)

The Oilers have been knocking on Lord Stanley’s door for a few years now. They lost Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals by a narrow score of 2-1 to the Panthers last season. The Oilers have come as close as a team can get without winning the whole thing and there are a ton of eyeballs on this team to get it done this year. They have arguably the best 2 players on the planet on their roster in Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, along with a deep, talented roster that now has experience in the Stanley Cup Final. The time may have finally arrived for McDavid to hoist the cup.

2024/25 NHL Stanley Cup longshot picks

Tampa Bay Lightning (+2500)

Although the Lightning did not keep up their pace of reaching the Stanley Cup Final, they have not gone anywhere from the playoff picture. Tampa made a calculated move to let Steven Stamkos walk and brought in another valuable player in Jake Guentzel. This is a deep, experienced roster with a winning coach. Another cup win would not be surprising, giving the +2500 odds plenty of appeal.

Detroit Red Wings (+4000)

Fans in Detroit are getting impatient after their 8th consecutive season of missing the playoffs, but this might be the team worth waiting for. Their roster is a great balance of youth, experience, size and talent. The Red Wings are overshadowed by a loaded Eastern Conference. Come November, that could change and these odds could shrink quite a bit.

Pittsburgh Penguins (+4500)

Similar to Colorado, any team with Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang has a chance. The Penguins narrowly missed the playoffs last year and had a nice offseason, which should keep them in contention. This is a veteran-laden roster that knows how to play in the postseason. They just have to get there and see what happens.
