NHL player Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matt, killed by a suspected drunken driver
The Columbus Blue Jackets have announced the tragic death of hockey star Johnny Gaudreau. The 31-year-old and his younger brother, Matthew, were killed last night in New Jersey when they were struck by a suspected drunk driver while riding their bicycles.
According to New Jersey police, the accident occurred when the driver, 43-year-old Shan Higgins, allegedly tried to pass another vehicle and struck the Gaudreau brothers from behind. Officers at the scene reported a strong odor of alcohol on Higgins, who later admitted to consuming at least five to six beers before driving. He failed a field sobriety test and is now facing two counts of death by auto. Higgins is expected to appear in court today.
The Gaudreau family gathered in New Jersey for Johnny’s sister’s wedding, which is scheduled for today, but they are now mourning instead of celebrating.
The hockey world is also reeling from the loss. Johnny Gaudreau, affectionately known as “Johnny Hockey,” was a standout player at Boston College and enjoyed an illustrious 11-season career in the NHL. Johnny and Matthew shared a deep passion for hockey, playing together in college.
The world of sports mourns the death of the hockey player
The Columbus Blue Jackets expressed deep grief, stating that Gaudreau greatly impacted their organization and the sport. They emphasized that Gaudreau’s character off the ice truly set him apart. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman echoed these sentiments, highlighting Gaudreau’s infectious spirit and skills on the ice and his roles as a devoted father, husband, son, brother, and teaMMAte.
NBA star LeBron James is among the many who have paid tribute.
He shared his condolences, saying, “My thoughts and prayers go out to the Gaudreau family. May Johnny and Matthew fly high, guide, guard, and bless their families from the heavens above.”
This devastating loss has left the Sports community, Johnny Gaudreau’s family, friends, and fans in deep mourning.
