Liverpool to switch kit suppliers from Nike in 2025 - report
Liverpool have been tipped to change kit suppliers in in 2025 when a five-year partnership with Nike comes to an end, handing the Reds a more comPetitive deal with a rival firm.
Liverpool risked taking a hit in terms of income when they signed with Nike in 2020, agreeing a minimum annual payment of £30m, significantly less than the guaranteed numbers seen in the very biggest deals of this kind.
But Nike's long-established leading presence in the Football and wider sporting industry, its marketing expertise and general clout were attractive to the Reds, making it possible to trigger higher levels of payments through sales and royalties.
Liverpool actually had to win a 2019 legal battle to partner with Nike in the first place, going to court after allegedly refusing to honour a deal with New Balance worth £40m per year. The club argued New Balance's marketing could not match the proposed Nike deal.
Yet the relationship already appears to be coming to an end. SportBusiness writes that adidas has emerged as the winning bidder for the next contract in a recent tender process. Any such deal would run for five years from the start of the 2025/26 season until 2029/30. The German giants are said to have seen off comPetition from Nike and domestic rival brand Puma.
Liverpool could earn more from adidas annually than the £50m the Nike deal was proving to be worth after bonuses, but is described as "well short" of Manchester United's £90m deal with them.
Liverpool have had kits made by adidas during two previous spells, between 1985 and 1996, creating some of their most iconic shirts ever, and again between 2006 and 2012. Warrior, a subsidiary of New Balance, held the contract from 2012 to 2015, before its parent company took over. Liverpool kits have also been supplied by British companies Umbro and Reebok over the years.
