Liam Scales reacts after signing new long-term Celtic contract
Celtic defender Liam Scales has signed a new long-term contract at the club until the summer of 2028.
Scales looked destined for an exit from the Bhoys last summer after a loan spell at Aberdeen. The Dons were notably interested in making that switch permanent.
However, injuries at Celtic thrust the Republic of Ireland international into the spotlight at the Bhoys and he’s not given up his spot in Brendan Rodgers’ side since.
Scales has become one of Rodgers’ most trusted players this season, making 40 starts in all comPetitions, and is firmly in place to contribute to this end-of-season push for silverware.
Now he has the security of a long-term stay in Glasgow – his previous deal had been due to expire in 2025 – and understandably he is buzzing.
Liam Scales on his new Celtic contract
The defender said [Celtic FC]: “I am delighted to agree this new contract and commit my future to Celtic.
“I have really enjoyed working under the gaffer, and with such a great group of players this year and I look forward to doing so again in the coming seasons.
“I love being part of this great club and I want to do all I can to contribute to Celtic and bring our fans as much success as we can.”
Scales is an advert for fringe players at Celtic
There may well be mixed reviews from Celtic supporters for this bit of Business. Scales isn’t universally popular with fans.
However, he has undoubtedly played an important role for the Bhoys this season, covering for injuries and being the only real consistent presence in the heart of the defence.
He’s an example for other fringe players at the club that they can work their way to become a big part of the side, even if their journey takes them out on loan or they find themselves on the sidelines initially.
Rodgers clearly thinks he has a role to play in the coming seasons. That may not necessarily be as a starter but everyone will be hoping he can continue to improve and develop.
