Bachelor in Paradise alum Joe Amabile will no longer run the TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 3.
“After the shakeout run yesterday, my back was aching and I caught a fever,” Amabile, 38, wrote via Instagram earlier on Sunday. “I was really hoping it was going to break through the night.”
He added, “After getting ready this morning my temp is still a little over 100 and my whole body aches. Probably best that I don’t run 26 miles today. Good luck everyone.”
Amabile also uploaded a video taken at 3:45 a.m. on Sunday, in which he said that he woke up “an hour” ago.
“Went to sleep yesterday, had a little bit of a fever,” he said in the footage, holding up a thermometer and race-day bib. “Woke up and I’m still at 100.4 [degrees]. Don’t think I’m gonna be able to run this morning.”
Amabile added, “It’s just probably not worth it. Sucks [because I’ve] been training for this, got shin splints, was waiting two weeks.”
Several other Bachelor Nation alumni wished Amabile a speedy recovery in the comments section.
“Shooooot I’m so sorry,” Kaitlyn Bristowe replied.
Matt James, who is also running the Sunday race, added, “Ahh man sorry to hear that, rest up Joe! 🙏🏾.”
Amabile’s sister-in-law, Talia Pitt, also shared a supportive message, commenting, “So much respect for you choosing your Health and wellness.”
Talia is the sister of Serena Pitt, who met Amabile on Bachelor in Paradise season 7. After getting engaged on the Mexican beach, Amabile and Serena, 27, tied the knot in October 2022. (They held a second ceremony in Charleston, South Carolina, one year later.)
Serena, for her part, revealed via her Instagram Story on Saturday, November 2, that Amabile was exhausted from his illness.

While Amabile recovers, he will be cheering on his fellow Bachelor and Bachelorette alums running on Sunday. In addition to James, 32, racers include Tayshia Adams and Peter Weber.
“I’m doing the same song the entire race — ‘Kids in Love’ by Kygo,” Weber, 33, exclusively told Us Weekly ahead of the marathon. “It’s my race song. It works for me and it puts me in a very meditative, trance-like state. I kind of go in and out of that — taking in the energy of the city and then right back to in between the ears.”
