“It Touched Me” – Jota Opens Up on Emotional Connection with Celtic Fans
Former Celtic winger Jota has spoken fondly of the deep affection he received from the club’s supporters during his time in Glasgow, saying it was one of the standout experiences of his career.
The Portuguese star, who initially joined on loan from Benfica in 2021, quickly won the hearts of the Celtic fans with his dazzling performances, netting 13 goals in his debut season and playing a pivotal role in Celtic’s league and cup double under Ange Postecoglou.
Jota’s permanent switch to Celtic saw him continue his electric form, contributing to the club’s historic treble-winning campaign the following year.
His time at Celtic came to an end with a £25 million move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad, before a recent transfer to French club Rennes.
Reflecting on his time at Celtic, Jota shared with Ouest France his deep appreciation for the fans and the unique atmosphere at Parkhead, recalling the special connection he felt while playing in front of them.
He said: “You had to be in Glasgow at that moment to feel it. Playing at Celtic Park, feeling the love of the fans, having the chance to be coached by an incredible coach (Ange Postecoglou) in a group where everything turned out well. You have to thank everyone for what happened there.
“I hope one day to be able to show my children what it was like, all the love I received. I’ll remember it for the rest of my life.
“It touched me because I didn’t expect it. When they started singing it, it was a very special moment.”
Jota’s time at Celtic may have come to an end, but the lasting impression left by the fans and his contributions to the club’s success will forever be remembered as a cherished chapter in his career.
He’s been linked back to Celtic eversince he left, but the chances of a return happening are very slim.
