My analysis
While the New York Islanders look to clinch their berth to the postseason, the New York Rangers have had their playoff spot locked up for a while now and have their sights set on a bigger prize: the Presidents’ Trophy. The Rangers come into Saturday occupying first place in the NHL standings with 110 points, thanks in large part to Artemi Panarin’s consistent production this season.

We’ve known for a long time that Panarin can produce points but it’s his goal scoring that’s really taken a step forward this season. The winger has 47 tallies in 80 games – 15 more than he’s scored in any previous campaign. 

Not only is Panarin converting on 16.2% of his shots this year – the best mark of his career – but he’s also putting more rubber on net than ever before.

The Rangers’ top scorer has 291 shots on target this season, which places him in the top 10 league-wide. 

Those trends look even better over the last couple of weeks as Panarin has recorded nine goals while shooting 18.4% on 4.45 shots per Game through 11 contests.

Panarin will be facing off against a struggling netminder in Ilya Sorokin, who’s given up at least three goals in five of his last seven starts while posting a brutal .889 SV% over that span.

While I stick with a Panarin goal, I’ll also look for these clubs to combine for Over 5.5 goals. Scoring has been easy to come by especially for the hosts of late as the Rangers have cashed the Over in eight of their last 10 outings.

I’ll also take the Isles on the moneyline as they skate in on a six-game winning streak, which includes a 4-2 victory against the Rangers on Tuesday. The Islanders also have a lot more to play for than their opponents, who locked up a playoff spot long ago.
