Dani Alves was initially sentenced to prison for four and a half years after sexually assaulting a woman in Barcelona in 2022, but on Monday, he was released from prison on a 1 million euro bail. It’s not yet known where the money came from. In addition to the payment, Alves was also forced to give up his Brazilian and Spanish pasSports and attend court every Friday to prevent him from fleeing the country.

Alves was in preventive detention for 14 months after he and his lawyer Inés Guardiola appealed the guilty verdict. If his sentence is upheld, he will have to return to prison immediately. In Spain, someone can be held in preventive detention if there is a risk of reoffending, risk of destroying evidence, or risk of fleeing. He was kept in prison due to the flight risk and having substantial finances.

Alves’ defense team argued that he already served a quarter of his sentence and now has significantly less finances, and said that he will not flee. Alves said he “believes in justice” and is not considering fleeing the country. The judges agreed with his defense.

On Thursday, Alves made the first of his weekly required court appearances alongside his lawyer. They were inside for less than 10 minutes and when they came out, Alves was met with disdain and threats. One passerby yelled at him, calling him a “f***ing rapist” and said that in Brazil, he would be murdered.

It’s been reported that Alves was partying until 5 a.m. with friends and family in his $4.5 million villa in Esplugues de Llobregat on his first night out after being released from prison.
