How will Scottie Scheffler being detained in handcuffs affect his PGA Championship round 2?
World No. 1 Golfer Scottie Scheffler was detained by Louisville Metro Police on Friday morning while trying to drive into the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club, the site of this week’s PGA Championship, after a separate traffic incident earlier this morning that ended with a fatal accident involving a local Shuttle BUS that operates during the PGA Championship tournament and a pedestrian.
The man, who has not been identified, was struck and killed while crossing Shelbyville Road at 5 a.m. on Friday. The collision occurred in a lane designated for buses. For those reasons, there was heavy traffic, considering the circumstances and the complexity of the situation.
What rule did Scottie Scheffler break?
According to ESPN’s Jeff Darlington, who noticed the incident just past the entry to Valhalla Golf Club, Scheffler was detained by the police officers regulating the traffic in handcuffs. After misunderstanding traffic flow rules, he attempted to drive past a police officer directly into Valhalla Golf Club premises without obeying his instructions.
Darlington reported that Scheffler drove about “10 to 20 yards” after being told to stop. Scheffler explained that he didn’t realize the man telling him to stop was a police officer and did not raise his voice during the confrontation. The situation escalated rapidly, and Scheffler was placed in a police vehicle. After the ESPN journalist asked if he could help in sorting out the situation, the police officer informed Darlington that no help was needed and that Scheffler was going to jail.
Scheffler, who shot a 4-under 67 on Thursday, was initially supposed to tee off at 8:48 a.m. ET. However, Friday Round 2 was delayed earlier because of the fatal traffic accident. The tournament will resume at 8:35 a.m. after an hour and 20 minutes delay. Scheffler’s revised tee time will be 10:08 a.m.
