Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti remains the undisputed king of the Champions League. The Italian has extended his lead at the top of the comPetition’s most decorated managers thanks to the 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.

Ancelotti’s Champions League victories

Ancelotti has now tasted victory in the Champions League on five occasions, three times with Los Blancos and twice with AC Milan.

The 64-year-old first won the tournament with the Rossoneri in 2002/03 when they defeated Juventus in a penalty shootout after a drab 0-0 draw at Old Trafford in Manchester.

After surrendering a 3-0 lead to Liverpool in the 2005 final, he won his second title in 2007 as Milan gained revenge on the Premier League club in Athens.

Ancelotti’s first victory with Real Madrid, and third overall, came in 2013/14, when his team dramatically defeated Atlético Madrid in extra-time having been a goal down going into injury-time.

It looked as if that might be that for the Italian coach as far as the Champions League was concerned, especially after difficult spells at Napoli and Everton. But he returned to the top table with a surprise comeback in the Madrid dugout in 2021.

In 2022, Vinícius Júnior’s goal, as well as Thibaut Courtois’s inspired performance in goal, led the LaLiga giants to a 14th European title against Liverpool, and they have now added another one to their tally with their victory over Dortmund.

15 for Real Madrid in total, and five for Ancelotti. Next on the list of the Champions League/European Cup’s most successful managers are Pep Guardiola, Zinedine Zidane and Liverpool’s Bob Paisley, who are tied on three.
