The Houston Cougars are coming off a 4-win season which snapped a 3-year bowl streak. Houston now enters the Willie Fritz era, a coach with 208 career wins and is fresh off two huge years at Tulane. Quarterback Donovan Smith returns after throwing for 2,800 yards and 22 touchdowns, and QB Zeon Chriss transfers from Louisiana after 11 touchdown passes last year. Houston snagged a big transfer in wide receiver and return man Mekhi Mews, who helped Georgia win two national titles. The concern is Houston has to replace 4 of its 5 starters along the offensive line.

Defensively, A.J. Haulcy returns after leading Houston with 108 tackles, Anthony Holmes Jr. had 2.5 sacks and Jamal Morris had 2 tackles for loss. Houston has a ways to go after finishing 108th in scoring defense last year. Only Arizona State and BYU have the worst odds to win the Big 12 this season.
