Henry Martín sends hint to América over renewal
On Wednesday 6 March, América will visit Chivas to kick off a series of three derbies in 10 days, but there is one issue in particular worrying América fans: the possible departure of striker Henry Martín. That said, it was Martín himself who took advantage of the press conference prior to the first of the clásicos nacionales, to subtly highlight that he would like to stay with the club.
The Mexico international made it clear that he will seek to fulfil his dream of playing in the Club World Cup with América; a tournament that in any case, would be played after the deadline for his renewal.
Martín on the clásico
“We know how important it (clásico) is for the club, for us and for the fans; these are the goals we set ourselves, we have to go for all the titles,” he said. “The Club World Cup is a very important challenge... I want to be there. It would be one more dream fulfilled.
“Scoring a goal, no matter who it’s against, is a source of great pride and happiness for me and I show it when I celebrate. The celebrations are sometimes for the fans, but we don’t want to offend anyone. Once I offended someone and I apologised. The celebrations generate controversy but sometimes that kind of thing is missing. You’re going to see celebrations, from me or my team-mates. Whether I score or not, they are celebrated.”
He also recognised the career of Guadalajara’s recent signing Chicharito Hernández, adding: “Chicharito is a legendary player in the national team. He did well in Europe, and that’s why he is what he is today. Of course, he has an iNFLuence on the pitch and he will inject even more spice into the Game.
“Although he is coming off the back of an injury, that doesn’t matter, he is a goalscorer. We have to look after him, but it also depends on his team; us forwards can’t do things on our own. We have to nullify Chivas’ strengths and whoever plays best on the day and whoever wants it the most will win. The clásicos are won with heart.”
