Lewis Hamilton still loves racing an F1 car as much as ever, but admits there is one feeling that comes close to the experience.

The seven-time World Champion has faced a difficult start to the 2023 season and has been without a race win since 2021.

However, Hamilton insists that he still enjoys getting behind the wheel, though acknowledges that a special family moment brings him just as much joy.

"When my niece and nephew look into my eyes and call me uncle, that's probably the one thing that comes close to that feeling," Hamilton told Australian broadcaster Fox Sports.

"That's probably the closest thing. But then I guess you can do skydiving, you can do other wild things, but that's the safer one!"

Hamilton still loves racing in F1

With Mercedes' recent struggles, Hamilton admits that driving a not-so-strong F1 car is not something he enjoys as much as getting behind the wheel of a successful one.

"I do love it. I don't like driving not great cars," the Briton said.

"I don't like driving a car that's not the car that we had meant to have.

"But I love that challenge of, 'Hey, what can I do with it? Wins [are] not possible right now, so what's the maximum we can get? Can we be a little cheeky – if fifth is the best we can get, can we get a fourth or a third?'"

Hamilton still 'ready' to win a World Championship

While Hamilton has not been in a position to challenge at the front in recent times, the 38-year-old feels that he remains ready to fight for a title should the car improve.

"[We have to] just make sure we're consistent," Hamilton continued.

"[You have to] make sure that you're fit and ready so that when the car does all of a sudden switch on – and it is the car that you dreamed of having – you're ready.

"I'm ready to win a World Championship. I prepared the best way I can this year, I think the best I've ever prepared, and if the car comes correct tomorrow, I'll be ready to fight for the World Championship.

"Unfortunately that's not the case and the reality at the moment, but I'm working with everyone here and back at the factory to get there."
